The University of Nevada, Reno Latino Research Center is to serve as a focal point for research, advocacy, educational efforts, and outreach, on issues related to the Latino community within the State of Nevada and the Nation.

1st Bilingual Poetry Slam

Poetry slams are competitions that show off the a performer's skills both with writing and on stage. Think of this as "performance poetry".

A panel of 3 judges decides the overall winners based on originality, style and performance.

Poets compete for prize money plus spot and encouragement prizes:

  • 1st Prize $100 cash plus an encouragement prize
  • 2nd Prize $70 cash plus encouragement prize
  • 3rd Prize $50 cash

    • You must register online ahead of time to perform or call us at the number 784-4010.

    Last day to register is October 13th.

    Come along and perform your work or join the audience.

    Encouragement prizes are provided by Best Buy.

    Rules for the Bilingual Poetry Slam

    • 3 minutes or less (time starts from when you speak)
    • 1 poem and it must be related to Latino/Hispanic culture
    • All poems must be original
    • No props, no costumes, no musical instruments.
    • Poems can be either in English, Spanish or Spanglish.
    • Participants must be current students from Middle School, High School or NSHE (Northern Nevada System of Higher Education) Institutions.

    Poetry Slam es el arte de poesia recitada competitiva. Pone énfasis en ambos: la escritura y la actuacion, incentivando a los poetas a enfocarse en lo que estan diciendo y en como lo dicen.

    • Los poemas pueden ser escritos y leidos en Español, Inglés o spanglish.
    • Los participantes deben ser estudiantes actualmente cursando clases en Middle School, High School o en cualquiera de las Instituciones pertenecientes al NSHE (Nevada System of Higher Education)
