Using Lab Animals

Lab Mouse in Researcher's Hand

Research utilizing animals is regulated by numerous national, state, and local regulations and policies as well as university policies to ensure optimal husbandry of animals and animal welfare. Regulations and ethical concerns place scientifically legitimate humane limitations on research procedures in animals.

For an introduction to best practices for lab animal use, please refer to the Office of Lab Animal Medicine's Investigator Handbook. The Handbook covers topics such as personnel issues, regulation of animal research, animal welfare considerations, and University of Nevada, Reno-specific policies.
