Purpose - Goals and Objectives

  PLAN   GOALS   BYLAWS

Goal Two: Support the establishment of higher standards and expectations for rigorous learning, to ensure that graduates from high school demonstrate mastery of skills, including technology, needed for entry level positions and/or post secondary education.

Goal Two Objectives

1. Support high-quality, relevant professional development for educators.
a. Collaborate with educational institutions and community members such as business and industry to provide the needed experiences and skills for educators working with students K-16.
b. Assist in providing incentives, such as inservice, university, and performance improvement credits, for appropriate professional development relevant to the mission and goals of the Washoe K-16 Council.
c. Coordinate externship opportunities for educators.
Action Steps:
  • Develop appropriate media strategies
  • Involve individual schools, Partners in Education, Inc., and other relevant programs
  • Design and deliver presentations for civic, professional and parent groups
  • Expand use of Internet through the web site
2. Involve all stakeholders in Grades, Attendance and Conduct Count to encourage all students to stay and achieve in school.
3. Support the adoption of higher standards, curriculum, and assessment tools at the state and local levels to require more rigorous learning by all students.
4. Expand and implement the goals of the Washoe K-16 Council identified as the Career Link.
a. Develop an advocacy plan for curriculum changes, higher expectations and standards, and interaction with all stakeholders, mobilizing resources and expertise.
b. Promote the continuation of funding for School-to-Careers at the state and local levels.
c. Support integration of School-to-Careers activities into existing programs for all students.
Action Steps:
  • Promote and support the use of Career Opportunity Centers by students, parents and the community as an access point for career and employment information and community involvement
  • Encourage business and community leaders to participate in Career Opportunity Centers planning and programs
  • Coordinate the development of internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, career exploration and part time employment opportunities for youth through Career Opportunity Centers
  • Establish a committee to address needs of underserved populations, especially students at risk of dropping out
  • Establish mobile career opportunity center programs to address underserved needs
5. Assist in the establishment of career pathways.
a. Establish industry clusters to support each career pathway.
