The Grant Sawyer Center for Justice Studies was established at the University
of Nevada, Reno, in the fall of 1992. The Center operates state-wide
as one of the land-grant functions of the University. It was established
out of a recognition
that one of the timeless areas of citizen concern is justice at all
levels of society. This concern directs attention to scholarship,
social policy, and the relationship between the two. The Center was
created to stimulate scholarship that would generate information about
justice issues which could form the basis for informed social policy.
The Grant Sawyer Center Center for Justice Studies has several goals
including:
-
To
encourage faculty, departments, and students with an interest
in broad issues of justice to work together on research, teaching,
and service activities of mutual interest;
-
To
forge working partnerships between scholars, on the one hand,
and practitioners within the legal system of the community, state,
and nation on the other;
-
The Grant
Sawyer Center for Justice Studies is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary
scholarship in all areas broadly related to law, justice, legal systems,
and the complex interactions between these social institutions and the
members of society. This commitment extends from local to state, national,
and international justice issues. Center staff are available to assist
other scholars or organizations with all phases of research and development,
including grant writing, literature searches, preparation of written
reports, survey design and survey instrument development, and training
of survey personnel. The Center is also available to conduct survey
research on a contract basis.
