| Jean Dixon, professional photographer, and Katie Palani, professional student, undertook this project to show how the landscapes and urbanscapes of the Tahoe Basin have changed over the years. Many thanks to the UNR Special Collections department for furnishing all of the historic photos, and to Peter Goin for letting us use his Tahoe images shot in the early 1990s. Enjoy! |

Field Notes
Jean and Katie, with noted entourage in tow, wandered farther and farther from Kings Beach State Recreation Area and farther into private beach areas to get a good vantage point of the hills protruding into the lake. They saw a group of children picking up beach glass and crawfish parts, on this warm and sunny Sunday. Katie waded farther and farther into the water, and Jean couldn't help but feel sorry for the dog that just wanted to play. |

History
| As you can see in the first image, the lake side of the street was totally developed, with gas stations, a bowling alley and other businesses. Today, the buildings have disappeared and the beach is under the protection of the Californai State Parks system, as Kings Beach State Recreation Area. During the summer, beach goers can rent kayaks and paddle boats, go jet skiing or parasailing (with reservations of course). |
