Why I teach:

I like having a reason to think about why journalism behaves the way it behaves. As a teacher, I’m always being asked to justify why—why are media doing it this way? Why not that way?

What I’ve learned:

• There are not enough hours in the day, days in the week or weeks in the year.

• There are too many good ideas.

• No job is too big or too small. I think some painter has that on his truck.

• You should drop everything for family.

• I love graduation.

• God is in people.

• You can’t buy cheap dish soap—or cheap laundry detergent.

• Gardening is therapeutic.

• Gardens are forgiving.

• We sometimes underestimate our students.
