Kyocera Copystar Driver: Mac

It is not possible for the IT department to automatically push out the printer driver for the Kyocera copiers. Therefore, these instructions will guide you through the process of installing the driver manually. After installing the driver, you will then need to install the PaperCut application.

You must have administrative privileges on your Mac to complete these instructions.

Download and install Kyocera drivers

  1. Download the Kyocera Printer Driver (this file is called "Kyocera_Mac.dmg").
  2. You will want to take note of where the file is being downloaded. It may be on your desktop, in a Download folder, or it could be located anywhere else on your computer.

    Safari

Click the Safari menu in the upper left corner of the screen, select Preferences and select the General tab.  Look for "Save downloaded files to:" for the download location.

    Firefox

Click on the Firefox menu in the upper left corner of the screen, select Preferences and select the General tab.  Look for "Save files to" for the download location.

  3. Locate the downloaded installation file.  Double-click on the file named Kyocera OS X 10.5+.dmg.  A window will appear displaying the installation package.  Double-click on the icon to begin install.Kyocera Driver Package
  4. Click Continue in the resulting installation window until you come to the Installation Type step.Kyocera Installation Screen
  5. At the Installation Type step, enter the username and password of a local account on your Mac with administrator privileges (this is NOT your University NetID).Local Admin Password request

Installing the Printers

Although they will ultimately go to the same device, it is necessary to install a separate printer instance for color printing, and one for black and white printing. This is to ensure that the correct amount gets billed for the different types of print job.

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the screen, and open System Preferences.Apple System Preferences
  2. In the System Preferences windows, click on Print & Fax (OS X 10.6 and below) or Print & Scan (OS X 10.7 and above).Print Preferences Icon
  3. When the dialog box appears, click on the + at the bottom-left of the screen, and select Add Other Printer or Scanner...Add Other Printer Menu Option
  4. On your keyboard, hold down Control and click anywhere on the toolbar in the Add Printer dialog. Choose Customize Toolbar. This step is not necessary if an icon labeled Advanced is in the toolbar.Add Advanced Icon
  5. Drag the Advanced gear icon up into the toolbar and click Done.Drag Advanced Icon
  6. Click on the Advanced button, and fill in the following settings:
    • Type: Windows printer via spoolss
    • Device: Another Device
    • URL: smb://loki.unr.edu/CopyStar
    • Name: CopyStar Color (this can be whatever you would like - this is how the printer will appear in your list of available printers)
    • Location: This can be left blank - but you can put whatever you would like in this field.
    • Print Using: Kyocera CS 6550ci (KPDL) (you will need to search for this printer by clicking on Select Printer Software... from the drop-down menu)Color Printer Properties
  7. After completing the entries, click Add.
  8. You have now installed the Color printer for the Kyocera Copiers. For Macs, it is necessary to install a separate Black & White driver for the same copiers to avoid getting color charges for grayscale print jobs. Follow the same steps as for installing the color printer, but the Add Printer dialog should contain the following information:
    • Type: Windows printer via spoolss
    • Device: Another Device
    • URL: smb://loki.unr.edu/CopyStarBW
    • Name: CopyStar B&W (this can be whatever you would like - it should be different from the name you gave the Color Copystar driver)
    • Print Using: Kyocera CS 6500ci (KPDL) (you will need to search for this printer by clicking on Select Printer Software... from the drop-down menu)BW Printer Properties
  9. When completed, you should have two separate CopyStar printers available to you. Other, non-CopyStar, printers may also appear in the list.List of CopyStar Printers

Now that you have the drivers installed, it is necessary to install the PaperCut client as well (you will not be able to print without this other piece of software installed).
