Personal Computer: Hardware Specs

The University of Nevada, Reno, has negotiated special volume discounts with Dell and Apple. Because of these savings, we recommend that you consider purchasing a Dell or Apple computer that meets specifications defined by University IT to optimize use within the campus network. For personalized recommendations related to special software or hardware requirements that remain compatible with the University's networking environment, please contact IT Support.

Personal Purchases

  • For personal purchases, the Computer Den in the ASUN Bookstore is the University's licensed reseller for hardware and software. They have special educational discounts with vendors.
  • IT Support is available for consultation and an evaluation of computing needs prior to purchase.

Recommended Specifications

Dell

Hardware
  • Laptop: Dell Latitude
  • Desktop: Dell Optiplex Tower
  • High End Scientific: Dell Premier Workstation
Processor (CPU)

Purchase the fastest offered for the price within budget.

Wireless Networking
  • Laptops and Netbooks: 802.11g/n wireless card
Memory (RAM)
  • 32-bit OS: 2GB minimum, 4GB+ recommended
  • 64-bit OS: 4GB minimum, 8GB+ recommended
Hard Drive
  • 160GB+ minimum, 250GB+ recommended
  • 128GB minimum for Solid State Drive (SSD)
Operating System
  • Windows 7 for Desktop
  • Win 7/8 for touch screen or mobile

A 64-bit operating system, although recommended, may not be compatible with all software.
Windows Vista and XP are not recommended. All support for XP ends April 8, 2013.

Antivirus Software

Your personal computer must be protected by anti-virus software if it is to access the University network.

Productivity Software

A separate section has been created on the various software options available to you and your personally-owned computer.

Anti-virus

It is a myth that Apple computers do not get infections though they are subject to fewer attacks. Although University IT does not have a specific recommended brand of Apple anti-virus, various options are presented on our page about personal anti-virus solutions.

Repairs

The Information Technology department is unable to provide hardware support on personally owned computer. However, basic tier one software troubleshooting is provided by IT Support.
