Software on your Office PC

The University of Nevada, Reno and Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) have negotiated with software developers and resellers to obtain their products at substantial savings which are then passed on to the faculty and staff.

We understand that there is a lot of software out there that may not be listed here. This doesn't mean that you can't use it at the University, it may just be that it is not requested enough for us to dedicate space on this page for it. However, if you would like information on purchasing any software, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Due to security and administration, IT supports only the current and previous versions of all software.

University-owned office computers will be automatically updated to the latest recommended version of Java. Please note, the recommended version of Java may not be the latest version.

University-owned computers are not automatically updated to the latest version of Java for several reasons:

  • The latest version of Java may not be compatible with University applications.
  • There may be known security vulnerabilities with the latest version of Java.
  • We want to minimize the disruption that can be caused with rolling out Java as frequently as it updates.

Therefore, in the meantime, IT recommends you ignore the pop-up boxes asking you to upgrade and understand that we will automatically roll-out the most suitable version. If this causes significant issues, please contact IT Support.
