Removing Cached Exchange Mode

By default, Outlook will cache some of your messages, and the address book, to speed up the retrieval of information (since it doesn't need to contact the remote e-mail server as often). However, this cache can sometimes hinder the performance of Outlook. For example, Outlook may be slow to respond to changes in the Global Address Book or fail to return some messages when searched. If you experience any of these issues, you may want to switch off "Cached Exchange Mode".

These instructions use Outlook 2013, but the process is the same for Outlook 2010.

  1. With Outlook open, from the tabs at the top, click on File.File Button
  2. On the main "Account Information" page click on the Account Settings button and select Account Settings... from the menu.Account Settings
  3. A new window will appear. Under the "E-mail" tab, select your University e-mail account and then click on the Change... button.Change Account Settings
  4. Another window will appear. Uncheck the box labeled Use Cached Exchange Mode.Uncheck Use Cached Exchange
  5. Click Next.Next button
  6. A warning may appear informing you to restart Outlook. Click OK.Restart warning
  7. Click Finish.Finish button
  8. Restart Microsoft Outlook for the changes to take effect.
