The University of Nevada, Reno does not officially support the Linux operating system or any of its derivatives (Android, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, etc). This is due to the complexity of knowledge needed to be able to support all the variations of this system, as well as a lack of resources in the IT department to provide technical support. Generally, we have found that those who choose to run Linux as their main OS already have the knowledge needed to support themselves with technical issues.
Even though we do not support Linux, this does not mean we are anti-Linux. We offer a CentOS-based High Performance Computer, "The Grid", to those needing a large amount of processing power for their research. Additionally, Linux computers should not have an issue accessing our wireless network or e-mail servers.
Minimal technical support is available at the IT Support Desk.
