Application Guidelines

Applicants must submit a pre-proposal that will be used to establish listed qualifications. The Nevada INBRE will evaluate the pre-proposals and notify applicants if they are qualified to submit a full length proposal for research support. The pre-proposals and full proposals must be formatted using standard NIH font and margin guidelines (see below).

Pre-proposal guidelines
A pre-proposal consists of the following components assembled into a single .pdf file:

  1. The pre-proposal application.
  2. Complete CV including date of hire, faculty rank, tenure status, a listing of current and prior research support, and a list of previous grant submissions. (CVs will be distributed to reviewers. Please do not include sensitive personal information such as social security numbers, telephone numbers, addresses, etc.)
  3. Project title and a one-page description of the rationale and specific aims of the proposed research. The title and topic of the project must be compatible with the Nevada INBRE theme of Cell Growth and Differentiation. Include 1-2 sentences describing the relevance to the theme.
  4. Letter from the department chair or dean indicating that they have read the pre-proposal, confirm the information in it, and will provide a release from teaching or other duties in exchange for salary support enabling 50% effort to the INBRE-supported research.

Full proposal guidelines
Full proposals will only be accepted from applicants invited to submit. The application form is a modified version of the NIH PHS form 398 including biosketch, detailed budget and a 10-page research design and methods section. Funding is targeted to early career investigators; extensive preliminary results are not required. However, an application will be strengthened by evidence of feasibility, and applicants may include preliminary results if available. A detailed budget (not modular) is required. The maximum funding is $135,000 per year.

Full proposals will be sent to a panel of external reviewers. Applicants should consider that the reviewers will be from many disciplines and write for a general expert audience. Avoid jargon and communicate to a general cell biology audience more than to your specialty area. Applications will be scored with regard to scientific merit, potential for future NIH funding, and relevance to the general area of Cell Growth and Differentiation. Funding decisions will be announced in early February 2008.
