Dr. Yupo Ma awarded R01 Research Grant from NIH Dr. Yupo Ma

The National Institutes of Health has awarded an RO1 grant to INBRE-supported investigator Dr. Yupo Ma, to fund the model of myelodysplastic syndrome progression and leukemic stem cells through various scientific techniques. This competitive grant, which totals nearly $2 million, will fund five years of research on these hematological conditions.

Dr. Ma and his colleagues created a novel model to study the development of a variety of cancers and have identified a potential target for the treatment of cancer. In his laboratory at Nevada Cancer Institute, Dr. Ma has been preparing biomarker antibodies to characterize stem cells. The value of these markers has already aroused interest from companies performing laboratory diagnostics and will have clinical implications in the diagnosis and prognosis of blood diseases in the near future. The role of cancer stem cells in the resistance to conventional therapies, including radiation therapy, has been established.

Dr. Ma has received INBRE support for his research over the past three years. Nevada INBRE is proud to count him among it's first cohort of research scientists. Congratulations to Dr. Ma and his team on being awarded this competitive grant .
