Photo Styling and Guide

Examples of different styles of photography

For a more interesting page, include active photos of people doing things. Faculty and students working in the field, in the lab or even in the classroom make more interesting pictures than a posed group shot.
(See examples of two students in the river and of Mackay Miners practice.)

Posed photos can be effective! The following picture works well because (See example of College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources student Mark Lemos in the fridge):

  • It's an unexpected view or angle
  • It communicates the student's research environment

Head and shoulder "mug shot" photos work well in directories, such as on the Department of Mathematics and Statistics website (www.unr.edu/math/people); headshots, however, can be boring as the main element on a page.

To go beyond a headshot, photograph your subject outside and use the beauty of campus as a backdrop. (See example of Psychology Professor Victoria Follette.)
