Welcome to the Intensive English Language Center (IELC). The IELC provides English language instruction to students preparing to study at US universities and colleges and to students wishing to improve their general English skills.Students attend class 20 hours per week (1 academic hour = 50 minutes).

Classes

The Intensive English Language Center offers a fresh approach to language teaching. Unlike traditional curricula, in IELC classes, students take an active role in their own learning. Students must participate in class discussions, group projects, library research, as well as other forms of collaborative learning. Students have classes in reading, writing, listening, speaking and conversation as well as mini-courses (4-5 weeks) in content areas of special interest to students. These topics may include literature, computers, business, and drama to name a few. Since students should be active members of their classes, attendance is very important.

Levels

During orientation, students take a placement test to determine class level placement. The IELC has four levels:
Low-Intermediate(LI)
High-Intermediate(HI)
Low-Advanced(LAD)
High-Advanced(HAD)

In the lower levels (LI and HI), students focus on basic communication skills while in the upper levels (LAD and HAD) students concentrate on skills needed for university work, such as note-taking and academic writing.

Facilities

IELC is located in room 220 of Edmund J. Cain Hall, on the west side of the UNR campus. Residence halls are a short walk from campus. All facilities of the university, including the library, computing center, health services, and recreation building, are open to ESL students. IELC offers a number of activities, including trips to interesting places on campus and in the Northern Nevada area.
