Margaret Layton
Assistant Professor
Hi! My name is Margaret Layton, and I’ve been
teaching at the Intensive English Language Center (IECL)
since 1992. I have a Master of Arts degree from the University
of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in English Language and Linguistics,
and this and my study of the German language led me to
teaching ESL a long time ago.
In 2000 I was promoted to the level of Assistant Professor
in IELC, and I’m busier than I have ever been! It
seems like I’ve been teaching here for a long time,
but I really enjoy what I do. I love to work with the
students from the many different countries who come to
UNR to go to college. For the last ten years or so, I’ve
specialized mostly in teaching our highest levels, especially
the High Advanced level, where IELC students do their
last ESL semester before entering academic programs. This
can be a really exciting level, in which students use
English to study all kinds of other subjects that they
might study in an American college or university. This
keeps what I do interesting to me as well, and I’ve
learned all kinds of things along with my students.
The excitement of shared learning and my memories of
my own foreign language studies in German and French help
to bring my students and me together.
