BRIDGE English Placement Test
The Intensive English Language Center (IELC) administers the Bridge English Placement Test to all new international students to determine if they need additional course work in ESL during their first semester in an academic program.

If the test results show weaknesses in English language proficiency, students will be placed in one or more sections of ENG 112 (a-d). The IELC will enroll students in the required courses.

Undergraduate students may not waive any required ENG 112 courses; these courses are taken concurrently with courses in the student's degree program during the first semester at the university. Undergraduate students must also complete ENG 113 (equivalent to ENG 101) and ENG 114 (equivalent to ENG 102) to graduate.

Graduate students may receive a deferral of the requirement if there is a course conflict with other required courses. The deferral would be decided in consultation between the IELC and the graduate student's advisor.

The IELC can waive the Bridge English Placement test requirement for those students who meet one of the following conditions:

A. a score of 600+ on the TOEFL (250 Computer-based, 100 Internet-based);
B. a degree from an American university;
C. the equivalent of English 101 or higher transferred from an American university or college.

BRIDGE English Courses (112a-d)

These courses are designed to help non-native speakers improve their English proficiency in the areas of (a) listening, (b) discussions and oral presentations, (c) reading, (d) composition and structure. These courses are three credit S/U courses. A maximum of six credits may be counted toward a baccalaureate degree. Upon approval of the Graduate Dean, English Bridge Course credits may be used to help satisfy the enrollment requirements for graduate students..
