Benefits Orientation

After you are hired as a new employee of the University of Nevada, Reno you will attend a new hire benefits orientation. At the new hire benefits orientation you will learn about the benefit programs offered to you and your eligible dependents. You will be provided with the enrollment materials for:

To enroll to attend a New Hire Benefits Orientation please enroll through the Professional Development and Training website. Orientation is now offered in two parts, New Hire Benefits and New Hire Campus Orientation. You will need to enroll in both sessions individually, thus you are able to pick sessions that best suit your schedule.

New Hire Benefits

This session will provide you with an overview of the benefits available to you as an employee of the University of Nevada, Reno. This session is generally offered weekly on Friday mornings. It is approximately 3 and one half hours in length and includes a presentation of the mandatory Sexual Harassment Training which will satisfy the requirement of all new employees to have sexual harassment training. Employees will also have the opportunity to enroll in health insurance benefits and retirement (if applicable).

New Hire Campus Orientation

Learn important information on how to navigate through the UNR system and where to find resources that will make your job easier and enhance your work and personal life.Through activities and presenters, employees will learn valuable information about the university and the benefits of working at a higher education institution. Employees will begin to develop relationships and see how their department and other units contribute to the goals and mission of a land grant institution.

Notification Process for New Hire Benefits Orientation

Benefits Eligibility for New Hires

  Health Insurance Other Benefit Plans

Classified Staff

Employed at least 50% of full time. Employed more than 90 consecutive days. Includes some temporary employees.

Effective the first of the month following three months of full-time service (full time service is working at least 80 hours in a month).

Supplemental Insurance Effective as soon as the enrollment form is processed. Enrollment must occur within 60 days of hire.

Mandatory Retirement (PERS) - Effective on the first dollar of eligible compensation that is received.

Faculty

Employed at least 50% of full time on an annual contract.

Effective on the first day of the first full month of employment.

Supplemental Insurance Effective as soon as the enrollment form is processed. Enrollment must occur within 60 days of hire.

Mandatory Retirement (RPA) - Effective on the first dollar of eligible compensation that is received.

Letter of Appointment with Benefits

Employed at least 50% of a full time contract, for 12 continuous months.

Effective the first of the month following 90 days of continuous full-time employment.

Supplemental Insurance Effective as soon as the enrollment form is processed. Enrollment must occur within 60 days of hire.

Mandatory Retirement NSHE FICA Alternative Plan - Effective on the first dollar of eligible compensation that is received.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Employed at least 50% of full time on an annual contract.

Effective on the first day of the first full month of employment.

Supplemental Insurance Effective as soon as the enrollment form is processed. Enrollment must occur within 60 days of hire.

Mandatory Retirement (Postdoctoral Fellow Plan) Effective on the first dollar of eligible compensation that is received.
