Classified Staff Grant-In-Aid

Classified Staff

An employee must enroll in training and educational opportunities available to them through University programs. In support of these opportunities, classified employees of the University who are .53FTE or greater and have been employed by the University of Nevada, Reno for 6 (six) month or more on the date the semester starts are eligible for the Grant-In-Aid. Temporary Classified employees are not eligible for this program.

Eligible classified employees may take a maximum of 6 credits per semester but a maximum of 12 credits per fiscal year (July 1 though June 30). The course begin date will determine what fiscal year the grant-in-aid is credited against.

The maximum of 6 credits may be taken during spring, fall or summer. Classes taken during work hours can be no more than 3 credits and must have appointing authority approval.

Tuition is paid in full when classified employees enroll in a course that can apply toward the completion of a degree or is job-related. Job-related courses include those courses needed to enable the employee to meet the standards of performance for the current position; those which update the employee's skills, knowledge, and techniques in the current position; courses which are beneficial to the department's operation; and courses which apply toward the completion of a degree.

Courses that are for audit, non-credit or recreational are not eligible. Courses that are paid for by another means of sponsorship are not eligible. The Classified Staff Grant-In-Aid cannot be used to improve a grade for any class previously taken.

The Classified Staff Grant-In-Aid covers all mandatory fees (laboratory and technology fees). Student Health Fee is waived for Classified employees.

Extended Studies reserves the right to refuse to honor a Grant-In-Aid in a requested class if enrollment for that class has not reached the level to pay for itself.

If course/courses to be taken with the Grant-In-Aid was/were requested by the supervisor, release time must be granted. But if the course/courses was/were requested by the employee, supervisor may grant release time (but no overtime) or the employee may use annual leave, may schedule class/classes outside work hours, or may have a flexible work schedule to take the class/classes.

For course/courses taken with the Classified Staff Grant-In-Aid , the employee must receive a grade of ‘C' or better for undergraduate courses or ‘B' or better for graduate courses , or will be required to repay the full amount to UNR by the schedule below. With the employee signed Request form, the employee is authorizing UNR Office of Admissions and Records to release to Office of Human Resources the final grades of courses taken at UNR with the Grant-In-Aid. And for courses taken at campuses other than UNR, the employee must provide proof of their passing grade or repay all costs by the schedule below:

After the Grant-In-Aid is granted to the employee, the Office of Human Resources must be notified of any change of class to be taken or changes of the employee's status in the class.

If the class/classes taken with the Grant-In-Aid is/are officially dropped within the 100% refund period as regulated by the Admissions and Records, the entire refund reverts to the University. But if the class/classes is/are officially dropped after the 100% refund period, the employee must pay the non-refundable amount that was charged to UNR for the class/classes dropped.

Any payment due from the employee must be made directly to the UNR Cashiers. If the payment is not received from the employee by the above schedule due dates, the amount will be deducted from the employee's paycheck. Failure to pay may result in withholding transcripts, grades, diploma, registration and any check made payable to the employee by the University.

Courses taken by Classified employees are also subject to the provisions of NRS 284.343 and NAC284.482 through 284.522.

Eligible Classified employees can fill-out the Request for Classified Staff Grant-In-Aid below. Supervisor and Appointing Authority signatures have to be on the form before submission to Human Resources office at mail stop 238 for final approval and issuance of Grant-In-Aid.

Other Information

Departments may elect to pay for any supplies or books required for the course from departmental operating funds. The department may also elect to pay for additional courses for the classified employee from operating funds.

Signature

The Grant-In-Aid Request must have the signature of the immediate supervisor and the appointing authority.
