State of Nevada Mandatory Supervisory Trainings

Business Center North Human Resources and the Department of Personnel are pleased to offer Mandatory Supervisory Training classes for supervisors of classified employees to fulfill NAC 284.498.

Business Center North Human Resources currently offers the following core Mandatory Supervisory Training classes:University of Nevada Reno

To register for Mandatory Supervisory Trainings offered at the University of Nevada, Reno, visit the Training Calendar.  Trainees must supervise classified staff in order to attend. Additionally, Mandatory Supervisory Trainings, and additional training courses, may be taken through the State of Nevada Department of Personnel. Interested parties should register through the State of Nevada’s Nevada Employee Action and Timekeeping System (NEATS).  The Univeristy of Nevada, Reno, Professional Development and Training unit also offers non-mandatory supervisory modules, please see the Training Calendar to register.

Please Note: Supervisors must take the Equal Employment Opportunity course, which is currently offered through the State of Nevada Department of Personnel.

Class Descriptions

The information presented in sessions listed below is specific to supervisory and managerial employees supervising State of Nevada classified staff. These trainings satisfy a portion of NAC 284.498: training of supervisory and managerial employees. The classes may be used to satisfy a portion of the initial 40-hour training requirement for new supervisors and managers as noted in NAC 284.498(2). NAC 284.498(3) also requires 40 hours of refresher supervisory/managerial training to be completed every 3 years after the initial 3-year period.

Alcohol and Drug Testing:  Instructed by Janet Damschen

This class provides information on the alcohol and drug testing procedures established by the State of Nevada Department of Personnel. Trainees will learn the signs and symptoms associated with reasonable suspicion and will learn the steps to take if they believe one of their employees may be under the influence of a controlled substance or under the influence of alcohol. The class will review the forms used when the reasonable suspicion testing process is invoked and will also detail the post-testing processes. This class is mandatory for all individuals supervising State of Nevada Classified staff and is limited to those employees who are currently supervising classified staff.

Evaluating Employee Performance:  Instructed by Leslie Nady

This class focuses on creating a solid foundation on which to develop employee appraisals based on valid work performance standards and documentation. Discussion will include developing job elements, weighting elements and documenting work performance, among other topics. Audience participation is expected and open discussion encouraged. This class is mandatory for all individuals supervising State of Nevada Classified staff and is limited to those employees who are currently supervising classified staff.

Handling Grievances:  Instructed by Janet Damschen

This class provides information on the grievance procedures established by the State of Nevada Department of Personnel. The class will assist individuals supervising classified staff in understanding the grievance process and how to respond to grievances. Trainees will be introduced to the forms used and will be provided with response strategies. Case examples of actual grievances will be reviewed. This class is mandatory for all individuals supervising State of Nevada Classified staff and is limited to those employees who are currently supervising classified staff.

Interviewing and Hiring :  Instructed by Janine Nelson

This class discusses current processes concerning recruitment and selection of classified employees.  Content covers emerging issues in retention, selection, regulations, electronic recruitment strategies, interviews, and documentation processes.  Importantly, the class discusses legal implications of the hiring and interview process.  This class is mandatory for all individuals supervising State of Nevada Classified staff and is limited to those employees who are currently supervising classified staff.

Progressive Disciplinary Procedures:  Instructed by Janet Damschen

This class provides information on the progressive disciplinary procedures mandated by the State of Nevada Department of Personnel. Trainees will learn the steps of the progressive disciplinary process and how to document those steps. They will learn about what issues to address, how to address them, and how to keep supervisory files. The class provides an opportunity for supervisors to learn from each other through interactive discussion. The class will follow a disciplinary case all the way through the progressive discipline steps from inception of the problem to dismissal. Students will also learn about the Nevada System of Higher Education resources available to them to assist them with personnel management. This class is mandatory for all individuals supervising State of Nevada Classified staff and is limited to those employees who are currently supervising classified staff.

Regulations

NAC 284.498 requires supervisory and managerial training for individuals supervising classified employees stating: 

  • Supervisors must attend training regarding the evaluation of employee performance within 6 months of initial appointment.
  • Supervisors must attend at least one training class in each of the areas listed below within 12 months of initial appointment:
    • Alcohol and Drug Testing
    • Equal Employment Opportunity
    • Handling Grievances
    • Interviewing and Hiring
    • Progressive Disciplinary Procedures
  • Supervisors must attend additional training totaling 40 hours (including hours from above) within 3 years after initial appointment.
  • Supervisors must attend at least 40 hours of training during every 3-year period to enhance supervisory skills.
