VI. Keys

Always close and lock your door whenever you leave your room, even if only for a short time. Never leave your room open or unlocked if your roommate is asleep! This leaves your roommate especially vulnerable. Violations to the security of the building as listed below may lead to disciplinary action up to and including license cancellation.

A. Building Entry. Entry into the building exterior entrances is made by using the individual resident's Student ID Card. In some halls, the Student ID Card is also used to access wing, suite, and even individual room doors. For this reason, all residents are required to obtain and carry their Student I.D. Card or an authorized equivalent. If a resident should lose their student ID card, they need to notify housing staff immediately so the card's ability to access the building is canceled. The resident may be issued a temporary card to access their room, but they need to obtain a new student ID card and have it programmed as soon as possible to obtain full hall access. Replacement ID cards are available at the One Card office located at the Joe Crowley Student Union.

B. Lockouts. If you lock yourself out of your room, upon presentation of identification or confirmation of your identity, you may check out a room key or access card from the front desk. You have three free lockouts per semester; after the third, there is a $5 fee per lockout. You will have 15 minutes to return the key or card.  Keys or cards not returned in a timely manner (or in no case beyond the next business day) will be presumed lost, necessitating a lock change and imposition of associated fees.

C. Lost Keys. Report lost or stolen keys or student identification cards to the front desk as soon as you discover them missing. You may be issued a temporary key or card for 24 hours. If the keys are still missing after 24 hours, your lock will be changed and you will be billed for the replacement key(s). Do not hesitate to report missing keys: Failure to immediately report missing keys or student ID cards creates a breach of security for everyone and is considered a serious offense to the residence community.

D. Building Access. As noted above, Student ID Cards are used to access the exterior doors to the halls and many interior doors in some halls. You are responsible for carrying your Student ID Card with you whenever you leave the building. It is not the responsibility of desk staff to open the door for those without their Student ID Cards.

E. Unauthorized Use. Duplicating, borrowing, or loaning room keys or Student ID Cards to guests or friends is strictly prohibited under any circumstances. Keep close track of your particular Student ID Card; it is considered a key because each card is programmed for the individual to whom it is issued. They are not transferable. Possession of any key or Student ID Card other than your own may result in cancellation of your housing license agreement. Loaning your key or Student ID Card may also result in the cancellation of your housing license agreement.

F. Requests for Access. Residence hall staff may check out a room key or access card only for the occupants of that room. Other individuals, including relatives, may not be granted access without the written consent of the resident and this will be done only in exceptional circumstances. Misrepresenting yourself in an attempt to gain access to a room may result in cancellation of your license agreement.
