III. Guests and Security

Other than staff and authorized personnel, only residents and their guests are permitted in the residence halls. It is your responsibility to inform guests of residence hall policies and to encourage compliance. You are expected to accompany guests at all times while they are in the building. To verify that you are a resident, you may be required to show your student ID at the front door.  Your cooperation will help protect the security of your building. 

1. You will be held responsible for the behavior of your guests. Every member of a community has obligations to others in the community which outsiders may not have. Consequently, the people who bring a nonresident into their living environment must be willing to assume responsibility for that person's behavior.  This encourages residents to give greater consideration to who they bring into the residence hall and also to make greater efforts at encouraging responsible behavior by their guests. While you cannot control another person's behavior, you can control whom you choose to have as a guest. The fact that you are responsible for those people you allow to visit should foster more judicious decision making on your part.
2. Guest check-ins. During designated hours, you are responsible to check-in guests at the front desk and escort them at all times each time they enter the building. Guests must leave acceptable photo ID upon check-in and are responsible for picking it up when they leave. NOTE: the University's One Card has cash value available on the card, as a result: the University One Card Student ID will not be accepted as a form of identification to be left at our desks.
   Being a guest is a privilege, not a right. Only the person who left the ID may retrieve it. The Department of Residential Life, Housing and Food Service is not responsible for IDs that are not retrieved by the individuals who leave them. Individuals not properly signed in are considered trespassers and are subject to citation or arrest. Residents are responsible for assuring that their visitors are properly signed in and escorted while in the building. Delivery personnel and unescorted guests must be met at the building entrance.
3. Restroom Use. The use of common floor bathroom and shower facilities by guests of the opposite sex is prohibited. 
4. Propping doors. It is prohibited to prop open any wing or exterior doors. This is a breach of security that can put you and others at risk. Do not let unknown individuals into the building. Refer them to the front desk for assistance. As part of your commitment to community living, it is essential for you to assume responsibility for helping maintain a safe and secure environment for all residents. 
5. Exterior doors. Opening a fire exit door is prohibited at all times except during an emergency.  Many exterior doors have limited hours for use. Failure to abide by the limitations is deemed a serious breach of security for the residence hall community and may result in severe disciplinary action. An alarmed door should only be heard in times of a fire or similar emergency.  Therefore, causing an alarm to sound is the same as causing a false fire alarm and is a violation of state law.
