Hey Wolf Pack!
The Program in Health Care Ethics has gone virtual. We'll be using the Second Life environment to hold discussions and help us be more accessible to you, our students. We can usually get either a faculty or staff member online at any time during the day, just let us know when and where you'd like to meet!
If you are already on Second Life, search for our group "Health Care Ethics Program at UNR". Join the group and you will be able to find us online, and participate in our discussion forum - Ethics Bytes.
If you are not yet on Second Life, the software and basic membership is free. Please go to the Second Life website to get started, or see below for instructions.
Accessing the Second Life Grid is actually very simple. If you're unsure whether your computer is capable of running the software, please visit the System Requirements page.
1. First step is configure you're avatar. When configuring your avatar, please keep in mind the gender you wish to be, skin color, etc. They have "models" you choose from; pick one closest to your idea of who you'd like to represent you. You will be able to make changes to your appearance once the software is downloaded. At this time, you will also need to enter a first name and CHOOSE a last name. This can be difficult as many first names are already taken and the last names are provided (you pick one from the list). You will also need to provide a password to enter your avatar's account. Pick something you will remember but also one that has Password Strength (Use CAPITAL letters, numbers, and make your password six letters or more; avoid common words or phrases). Now that you've had some tips, go to the avatar setup page.
2. Second step is to check your email. Once you have completed your avatar setup and submitted the form, you will receive a confirmation email to the address you provided. Within that email is a link to download the free software. Choose your computer type (Mac, PC) and your operating system. Install as instructed.
3. Last step is to run the Second Life program you just downloaded. You will get a screen similar to this...

Within the red circle are the boxes that you enter your First Name, Last Name and Password into. Once done, you choose "Connect" and after a few moments, you should see your avatar standing in Second Life.
