A total of 18 undergraduate credits are required. Students must complete 6 core credits as well as 12 credits in elective classes.

 

CORE

 

HCE 301 Foundations of Health Care Ethics (3 credits)
Introduction to theory and practice of ethics in health care sciences including medicine, nursing, social work, public health, human development and other health and human service professions.

 

CHS 345 Ethical Dimensions of Health Ecology (3 credits)

Investigates the moral and philosophical bases of bioethics as applied to health, wellness, and sport. Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of instructor.

 

OR

 

PHIL 245 Contemporary Moral Issues (3 credits)

Topical questions in practical ethics, e.g., war and terrorism, world hunger, abortion, racial discrimination, gender roles, the environment from a multicultural perspective. (Diversity course.)

 

OR

 

PHIL 450 Ethical Theory (3 credits)

Branch of ethics that concerns morality. Topics include: maximizing good, constraints on the pursuit of good, self versus society, rules versus judgment, moral conflict, beyond morality. Prerequisite: 6 credits in philosophy.

CRJ 489 Star Trek, Law and Ethics (3 credits)
Exploration of legal and ethical issues of social change in the past, present, and future utilizing the vehicle of Star Trek. (General capstone course)

 

HCE 451 Diverse Societies (3 credits)
Religious perspectives in health and healing.

 

HCE 470 Religious Perspectives in Health, Healing & Ethics (3 credits)
Examines health, healing and ethics from the perspective of various religious traditions.

 

HCE 491 Independent Sudy in Health Care Ethics (1-3 credits)

Opportunity for students to master areas of knowledge in health care ethics through independent organization and assimiliation of material under the guidance of faculty advisors. Prerequisite: HCE 301.

 

HCE 495 Topics in Health Care Ethics (3 credits)

Course description varies by semester, call office for specific information.

 

HDFS 437 Death and Dying: Family and Lifespan Perspectives (3 credits)

Overview of death and dying. Coping and adaptation as an individual and family experience from prenatal development throughout adulthood. Emphasis on both personal and professional applications in human development and family studies, psychology or sociology.

 

HE 445 Human Values and Professional Ethics (3 credits)

Focus on value systems and major ethical issues in society and health care such as confidentiality, truth-telling, and codes of professional behavior. (General capstone course).

 

HE 446 Culture and Ethics Across the Lifespan (3 credits)

Analysis of the constraints on applied decision making, including the role that religion, family and society play in the formaiton of values. Prerequisite: HE 345.

 

HE 447 Health Ethics and the Humanities (3 credits)

Explores ethical health care concepts through the use of poetry, literature, film, and art. (General capstone course).

 

JOUR 305 Media Ethics (3 credits)

Systematic consideration of moral issues in the practice of mass communication. Prerequisite: JOUR 203.

 

NURS 497 Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing (3 credits)

Legal and ethical issues relevant to local and national health care professions and consumers, including cultural, legal, ethical research and practice issues. Prerequisites: HCE 301/HE 445, registered nurse licensure, admission to the major, or permission of the instructor.

 

PHIL 244 Bioethics (3 credits)

Treatment of such issues as abortion and euthanasia, cloning, genetic screening, just health care, patients' rights, the use of human and animal subjects in research. Prerequisite: HCS 101 or SW 220.

 

PHIL 245 Contemporary Moral Issues (3 credits)

Topical questions in practical ethics, e.g., war and terrorism, world hunger, abortion, racial discrimination, gender roles, the environment from a multicultural perspective. (Diversity course).

 

PHIL 450 Ethical Theory (3 credits)

SW 461 Social Services in Death, Dying, and Bereavement (3 credits)

Examines attitudes toward death and associated grief processes. Prerequisite: SW 321 or permission of instructor.
