Program Overview: The Graduate Student Association offers the Outstanding Graduate Musician Award to one exceptional musical performer. Applicants will submit 3 copies, on compact disc, of a live performance recording and one copy of the score. The recording must not exceed 15 minutes in length and must include accompaniment, as indicated on the score. Examples include (a) movement(s) from a concerto or solo work, arias, original compositions, or ensemble work that features the graduate performer, such as a jazz combo. All graduate student musicians, including non-majors, are encouraged to apply for this scholarship, which is for $500, disbursed in two equal payments in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014.
Eligibility: Applicants for this award must be registered, full-time graduate students (9 credits or 6 credits with an assistantship) in good academic standing at the time of application. Members of the GSA Executive Council and Awards Committee, and persons involved with the judging process of any GSA awards, are ineligible to apply. If selected as a finalist, applicants must be available to perform in a competition on Tuesday, April 9, at 5:30pm, and the winner should be available to perform at the GSA Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 11, at 7 pm.
Judging Criteria: A panel of faculty judges will evaluate the recordings based on quality of tone, intonation, technique, interpretation, and overall musical effect. The judges will select three finalists who will perform at a competition on Tuesday, April 9, at 5:30 p.m. The performance space will include a piano for accompanied work. The judges will choose the winner based on the live performances, and their decision is final.
Application Instructions: Please submit one copy of your application packet to the GSA Office (JCSU 302, Mail Stop 0057) by 5 pm on Friday, March 8, 2013. Your application packet must include the following: -Completed Cover Page -3 copies , on compact disc, of a live performance recording -1 copy of the score Applications must be submitted to the GSA Office in hard copy. Emails or electronic submissions will not be accepted.
Important Information: The GSA Awards Program is a highly competitive process. Applications are judged by UNR faculty members and administrators. The decisions of the judges are final. Applicants will be notified whether they have won an award by Wednesday, April 10, 2013. All applicants are invited to attend the GSA Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 11. Winners are expected to attend.
