NEW GRADUATE STUDENTS

The following is a step-by-step guide to help you get started with your graduate career at the University of Nevada, Reno.  It explains how you can activate your no-cost e-mail UNR account, create an on-line registration account, register for courses, and pay your fees.  If you have any questions about this guide or would like to recommend changes/improvements, please contact Michael Peters, Coordinator of Graduate School Operations, at either peters@unr.edu or 784-6934.

?HAVE YOU DONE THE FOLLOWING? CHECKLIST

  • Admitted to a Graduate Program
    Received and read your letter of admission from the Graduate School

  • Contacted your graduate program
    Contact graduate program director for registration advisement and program/departmental orientation requirements.

  • Activate your UNR e-mail account
    Go to University of Nevada, Reno email activation webpage at https://secure.unr.nevada.edu/swami/  click on the link "Activate my account". This will allow you to both activate your UNR e-mail account and forward any mail sent to that account to an e-mail address you prefer to use.  This e-mail connection must be established for you to receive timely information from university offices.

  • Create your ePAWS account
    Again, use the quick link on the lower right hand corner of the UNR homepage, “ePAWS” which will lead you through the steps to set up an account that will allow you to register for classes, pay fees, check class schedule, update address, etc.  Before you can actually register for classes you must 1. Be officially admitted to UNR and 2. Satisfy the immunization requirements.  Once you have done that, you will be able to register.

  • Attend New Graduate Student Orientation
    On-Campus New Graduate Student orientation will be Thursday, Aug 19, 2009 from 1:00 pm– 5:00 pm in the JCSU followed by the GSA Graduate Student Reception in the JCSU from 5 – 8 pm. If you are unable to attend the On-Campus orientation you will need to complete the On-Line orientation which will be available beginning on Thursday, Aug 19, 2009. You must complete one of the two options not both. You must also pre-register at the following link http://www.cis.unr.edu/Grad/Workshops.aspx.

  • Establish your Net-ID account
    Once you have registered for at least one credit, you can establish you Net-ID account.  Again, on the UNR homepage, use the quick link in the lower right hand corner, click on the “Computing Help Desk” button. At the Help Desk page, click on the “Get Started” button in the upper right hand corner of the sidebar. Under the “Get Started” menu, click on the first topic, entitled (again) “Get Started” which will bring you to the “About your NetID” page with instructions on how to proceed.  Your NetID is used to access all university computing services and on-line classes.

  • Obtain student ID
    You must first register in at least one credit before you can obtain your picture student identification Wolf card from the Student Union customer service desk. Your first student ID is free it is covered by the new graduate student orientation fee.

  • Pay Fees
    Pay either on-line through ePAWS or at the Cashier’s Office, Fitzgerald Student Services Building, third floor.
    • Last day to pay fees without late fee is August 21, 2009
    • Late fees start August 24 , 2009 and are $25.00 per day up to $250.00
    • Last day to pay with late fees assessed is September 4 , 2009
