Color Isostatic Residual Gravity Anomaly upward continued 10 km viewed on shaded topography with faults.  The isostatic residual color patterns reveal large scale bulk crustal density variations that correlate with major topographic and tectonic terrains. Orange is high gravity and purple is low.  Changes in crustal age, terrain type and temperature produce most of these anomalies. 

The gravity data underlying this image is part of a compilation of new data sets and two large existing regional databases reprocessed by Oppliger, 2002. For a comprehensive discussion on the significance of isostatic residual anomalies see  Simpson et. al., 1986
