Founded in 1989, the Geographic Alliance in
Nevada (GAIN) is part of the National Geographic Society's state
alliance network, designed to get good geography back into the
nation's K-12 curriculum. Alliances are active in all 50 states,
Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Canada. Membership includes
over 100,000 university geographers, K-12 teachers, school administrators,
and education decision makers. In Nevada, 21 teachers have attended
National Institutes; 86 teachers and pre-service students have
attended our state run institutes.

These teacher
consultants (TCs) have conducted over 500 hours of in-service
classes and work shops for 28,000 teachers who in turn have reached
over 131,000 Nevada students. The great success of the Alliance
model is attributed primarily to the fact that the project targets
teachers in grades K-12 as the keys to success. The emphasis
of the program is on improving teachers' ability to teach good
geography, for the most part, in pre-existing courses in history,
the social studies, and earth sciences. The Alliance helps teachers
by providing institutes and workshops, developing materials,
and encouraging curriculum reform. During the current year, working
closely with the Nevada State Department of Education, a major
focus of the Alliance program will be to develop Geography Standards
for Nevada modeled after the National Geography Standards as
represented in Geography
for Life. |
