Jolena Johnson: Lesson - "How Many Chinese Are There?"

China Cartograph -- Area

You will be making a cartograph to use to draw conclusions when comparing the land area of the United States with the land area of China. Follow these steps to make the cartograph:

1. Centered at the top of the paper that is given to you, print the word "CHINA" in capital letters that are approximately 2" high.
2. Centered at the bottom of the paper that is given to you, print the words and numbers "AREA = 3,705,407 SQ. MILES" in letters and numbers that are approximately 2" high.
3. Between the two rows of lettering, covering most of the available space, draw an outline of the land area of China.
4. Using the equivalent of one dot = 100,000 sq. miles, determine how many dots are needed to represent the land area of China of 3,705,407 sq. miles.
5. Beginning in the center of the outline of the land area of China, closely place the dots in a square to represent the land area of China.
6. In the lower right hand corner of the paper, draw a compass rose.
7. In the lower left hand corner of the paper, print the label "One dot = 100,000 SQ. MILES."

China Cartograph -- Population

You will be making a cartograph to use to draw conclusions when comparing the population of the United States with the population of China. Follow these steps to make the cartograph:

1. Centered at the top of the paper that is given to you, print the word "CHINA" in capital letters that are approximately 2" high.
2. Centered at the bottom of the paper that is given to you, print the words and numbers "POPULATION = 1,218,800,000" in letters and number that are approximately 2" high.
3. Between the two rows of lettering, covering most of the available space, draw an outline of the land area of China.
4. Using the equivalent of one dot = 10 million people, determine how many dots are needed to represent the population of China of 1,218,800,000 people.
5. Beginning in the center of the outline of the land area of China, closely place the dots in a square to represent the population of China.
6. In the lower right hand corner of the paper, draw a compass rose.
7. In the lower left hand corner of the paper, print the label "One dot = 10 million people."

United States Cartograph -- Area

You will be making a cartograph to use to draw conclusions when comparing the land area of the United States with the land area of China. Follow these steps to make the cartograph:

1. Centered at the top of the paper that is given to you, print the words "UNITED STATES" in capital letters that are approximately 2" high.
2. Centered at the bottom of the paper that is given to you, print the words and numbers "AREA = 3,618,770 SQ. MILES" in letters and numbers that are approximately 2" high.
3. Between the two rows of lettering, covering most of the available space, draw an outline of the land area of the United States including Alaska and Hawai'i.
4. Using the equivalent of one dot = 100,000 sq. miles, determine how many dots are needed to represent the land area of United States of 3,618,770 sq. miles.
5. Beginning in the center of the outline of the land area of the United States, closely place the dots in a square to represent the land area of the United States.
6. In the lower right hand corner of the paper, draw a compass rose.
7. In the lower left hand corner of the paper, print the label "One dot = 100,000 SQ. MILES."

United States Cartograph -- Population

You will be making a cartograph to use to draw conclusions when comparing the population of the United States with the population of China. Follow these steps to make the cartograph:

1. Centered at the top of the paper that is given to you, print the words "UNITED STATES" in capital letters that are approximately 2" high.
2. Centered at the bottom of the paper that is given to you, print the words and numbers "POPULATION = 260,341,000" in letters and number that are approximately 2" high.
3. Between the two rows of lettering, covering most of the available space, draw an outline of the land area of the United States including Alaska and Hawai'i.
4. Using the equivalent of one dot = 10 million people, determine how many dots are needed to represent the population of the United States of 260,341,000 people.
5. Beginning in the center of the outline of the land area of the United States, closely place the dots in a square to represent the population of the United States.
6. In the lower right hand corner of the paper, draw a compass rose.
7. In the lower left hand corner of the paper, print the label "One dot = 10 million people."
