OVERVIEW

This lesson will teach students to compare and contrast the land area and population of the United States and China. Students will learn to draw conclusions about population density in relation to land area.

GRADES

Grades 6 - 10.

INQUIRY QUESTION

How does the population of the United States compare with the population of China?

CONNECTION TO CIRRICULUM

This lesson uses Social Studies and Math skills. It is the introduction to a complete unit on the geography of China.

STANDARDS

#1 How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective.
#3 How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface.
#12 The processes, patterns, and functions of human settlement.

TIME

One 45-minutes class period.

MATERIALS

OBJECTIVES

A. Students will conclude that the United States and China are about the same size in land area.
B. Students will conclude that the population of China is about five times as much as the population of the United States.
C. Students will conclude that the population density of China is much greater than the population density of the United States.

PROCEDURES

1. Using individualized instruction sheets to prepare cartographs showing land area and population of the United States and China, four groups of students will prepare the cartograph assigned to each group within a specified time.
2. When cartographs are finished, the cartographs showing the land area of the United States and China will be compared. Conclusions about the relative size of each country will be discussed.
3. Cartographs showing the population of the United States and China will be compared. Conclusions about the population of the two countries will be discussed.
4. Conclusions about the population density of the two countries will be discussed.

ASSESSMENT

Students will be assigned a three to five paragraph essay on how they think their lives would change if they lived in a country with the population density of China instead on living in the United States. The essay should contain specific information about housing, jobs, education, fodd availability, and day to day living.

EXTENSIONS

1. After discussing daily life in China, compare and contrast the daily life in China with the daily life in the United States with emphasis on how population controls aspects of daily life.
2. Obtain information about world food production/consumption and world food distribution. Using a world map, graph the population, food production, food distribution, and food consumption of various contries in the world. Discuss patterns that are noted.
