Global Gaming:
A Case Study of Business, Culture, and Politics in Macau (SAR), China

Commercial gaming is an international enterprise which requires a serious examination of local regulatory structures and business and cultural practices before entering into and while operating in new jurisdictions. The international expansion of gaming has no better illustration than what can be seen and experienced in Macau, one of two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. Macau, composed of the Macau peninsula and two islands (Taipa and Coloane), touch mainland China and is only a short hour by ferry from Hong Kong. It is home to more than a half-million people situated on just over 11 square miles of land. Macau has a rich history and culture with the blending of East and West, as the city-state has been heavily influenced by the Portuguese since the 1500's.

This course explores such complexities and allows students to understand them in a unique way-by traveling to Macau! Students will be able to experience the city firsthand, which will give context and texture to the usual information they would otherwise hear anchored to a classroom in Nevada. The course will include tours of both Macau and Hong Kong where students will see many cultural and historic sites. Students will also see many of the new lavish and imposing casino properties that have changed the face of the city.

Gregory Mosier, J.D., Ed.D., is Dean of the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business. Dr. Mosier will lead the Study Tour throughout the program. He will be assisted by Joseph Bozsik, administrative faculty for the Institute for the Study of Gambling & Commercial Gaming. Established in 1989, the Institute was the first academically oriented program of its kind and serves as a structure to broaden the understanding of gambling and the commercial gaming industries worldwide.
