Grants

Grants are “gift aid” which does not need to be repaid. Most grants are offered on a first-come first-serve basis.

Federal Pell Grant

Type: Federal Grant

Eligibility:

  • Need-based (must file the FAFSA annually)
  • Undergraduate, first bachelor’s degree
  • Federal Entitlement

Terms:

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time; less than half-time enrollment allowed in certain circumstances

Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

Type: Federal Grant which may convert to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan

Eligibility:

  • U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Must complete the FAFSA annually
  • You must agree to work full time for at least four academic years in a high-need field listed in the Teacher Shortage Area Nationwide Listing in a designated low income/Title I school
  • The four academic years of qualifying full time work must be within eight calendar years of completing or ceasing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant
  • IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete the service obligation, all TEACH Grants you received will convert to Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans. You must then repay the loans and you will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) originally disbursed.  Many, if not most, TEACH grant recipients end up having the aid convert to a loan.

Terms:

  • Undergraduate (junior/senior/Post Bacc) or graduate student enrolled in degree applicable courses while pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or another area included in the Nevada section of the Teacher Shortage Area Nationwide Listing
  • The University of Nevada, Reno requires a minimum 3.25 cumulative college GPA to qualify and a 3.25 cumulative UNR GPA to retain the grant
  • Make satisfactory academic progress 
  • Go to studentloans.gov annually and complete the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve (ATS) and Teach Grant Counseling 
  • Complete the annual TEACH Grant Application for the current year at Financial Aid & Scholarships Forms

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

Type: Federal Grant

Eligibility:

  • Awarded only to Federal Pell Grant eligible applicants
  • Undergraduate, first bachelor’s degree

Terms:

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time

Access Grant

Type: Institutional Grant

Eligibility:

  • Need-based
  • Graduate and Undergraduates

Terms:

  • Graduate Students must be enrolled at least half-time
  • Undergraduates must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 credits

Pack Advantage

Type: This award guarantees eligible undergraduate students a combination of gift awards (including but not limited to grants, scholarships, stipends and tuition/fee waivers) which will cover registration in 15 credits and mandatory fees and books each fall and spring semester. Funding occurs in late summer.

Eligibility:

  • Need-based
  • Pell Recipient

Terms:

  • Nevada Resident
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 credits
  • Make satisfactory academic progress
  • FAFSA submitted to the University of Nevada, Reno by February 1 annually
