External scholarships
Many scholarships are available each year from organizations that are not affiliated with the University of Nevada, Reno. We refer to these as, “external scholarships.” All students are encouraged to apply for external scholarships.
Each external scholarship organization determines its own criteria and deadlines, so be sure to read through all information carefully. In general, the best time to apply for external scholarships is at the end of the calendar year prior to the start of each fall semester.
The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships has reviewed and approved the following list of external scholarship opportunities for announcement. Each scholarship is a continuing program (this is not the first time the scholarship has been awarded) of at least $500 that directly issues funds made payable to the winner’s school. We do not promote scholarships requiring social media interaction. Learn more about scholarship information for external organizations.
This list is provided as a courtesy to our current and prospective students. The University of Nevada, Reno has no influence over external scholarship application or selection processes. The links provided may take you to websites that are not accessible for people with disabilities. You should never pay for scholarship applications or scholarship search services, and if you feel uncomfortable with any application or awarding components, you are under no obligation to proceed.
External scholarship award notification process
If you are awarded an external scholarship, you must submit a copy of your award notification and your NSHE ID to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships by emailing finaid@unr.edu so we can add a placeholder to your account. Once we receive a check from the external scholarship organization, we will remove the placeholder and apply the scholarship.
If you do not submit a copy of your award notice to our office, many complications can arise, including reduced aid from other sources. Checks received by the University just prior to the start of each semester may be posted to your account after University fees are due because of processing delays. If your scholarship is not applied before tuition and fees are due, you will either need to pay your outstanding balance or sign up for a payment plan and make the first payment so that you are not penalized with late fees or course cancellation.
In an effort to help those who are helping others, AAC is excited to offer 3 scholarships for those studying in the fields of behavioral health, counseling, psychology, social work, nursing or related sciences. Scholarships are open to full or part-time undergraduate or college graduate students. Students must be entering or enrolled in behavioral health, nursing, counseling, psychology, social work, marriage/ family therapy, or other program focusing on treating mental health and/or substance abuse issues.
Applicants must be graduate students pursuing a master's, doctorate or law degree in a field related to or identified with law, policy or public administration. Applicants must demonstrate a focus or concentration in the field of California water resources. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate work and be enrolled in at least eight units per term.
AFTH wants to help birth parents get on their feet and establish a career. College isn’t for everyone so we have made this scholarship eligible to anyone attending vocational or trade school, undergraduate studies including 4-year programs, associate’s degree and community college as well as accreditation and certificate programs. Payments are made directly to the schools on your behalf. Twice a year, our scholarship committee meet to review applications and chooses the winners. Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be granted, with higher amounts considered by the Scholarship Committee in exceptional circumstances.
The AICPA offers many scholarship opportunities for accounting students at varying points in their academic careers.
High school seniors, undergrads, and graduate students are welcome to apply. Applicant must be a resident of Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona or Nevada. To apply, please submit an essay detailing how addiction has directly affected you. A winner will be chosen based on strength of essay and financial need.
The AIEF program is one of the United States’ largest grantors of scholarships to Native Americans, providing nearly $450,000 to about 225 students each year. The scholarships are available for undergraduate, graduate and vocational students.
Two $2,000 scholarships awarded each semester to a student pursuing an automotive themed major.
The Arka scholarship program is aimed to help students that are interested in design, photography, packaging, engineering, business, supply chains or logistics. Applicants will choose from one or more of the following three categories and submit a 2000-word "blog post" with photos taken of packaging styles that inspire them.
Army Emergency Relief maintains two scholarship programs: the Spouse Education Assistance Program and the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for dependent children. Both scholarships provide financial assistance for students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at the senior level in an accredited civil engineering program, or in a related field as determined by ASDSO, and must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams.
Scholarships of up to $5,000 to study and intern abroad. Must be Pell eligible US Citizen. Study abroad program must be for credit and at least 4 weeks long. Study in Cuba and State Department "Travel Warning list" countries currently prohibited. Preference given to students who self disclose in essays if they are ethnically diverse, first generation college students, students with disabilities, or students within STEM majors. Applications for spring study abroad close the first Tuesday of October. Applications for summer, fall or full year study close the first Tuesday of March.
Caring.com is offering three $1,500 scholarships to university students attending an accredited U.S. college or university who care for aging relatives.
The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada Scholarship Program is intended to help students cover the ever-increasing cost of tuition. Some of our scholarships are based on financial need, but others represent an award for achievement. These scholarships typically go to students who have excelled in an academic area or have shown they can balance academics, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities.
Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada, a non-profit organization, offers multiple scholarships for students who have successfully completed a cooperative work experience with one of CMACN’s Producer Member companies.
Our scholarships of up to $8,000 per recipient are open to U.S. Citizen's and permanent residents and range from the arts, environmental studies, to a general scholarship open to students of all majors. All of our scholarships are open to students who will be full-time, undergraduate students for the fall school year. Some scholarships are also open to graduate students.
A scholarship open to highly qualified American Indian students at both the undergraduate and graduate level of study.
Multiple scholarships are awarded to students showing dedication to the pursuit of degrees in diverse disciplines including history, nursing, and education. The DAR Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to qualified applicants who are US Citizens regardless of race, religion, or sex. All multi-year scholarships, typically renewable up to four years, must be for consecutive years of attendance at an accredited college or university in the United States.
The HPSP is available for students pursuing advanced degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, psychiatric nursing, optometry or psychology. To qualify for the Health Professions Scholarship Program, you must: Be a U.S. citizen with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited school Be enrolled in (or have a letter or acceptance from) an accredited graduate program in the U.S. or Puerto Rico (varies by specialty) Maintain full-time student status during the length of the program. Qualify as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve.
This annual scholarship application is open November 1 to February 1 1) You are a graduating senior or past graduate (G.E.D. is acceptable) of the Washoe County School District in Northern Nevada. 2) You are a graduating senior or past graduate (G.E.D. is acceptable) of the Huntington Beach Union High School District in Southern California. 3) You are a graduate/current or previous student of Truckee Meadows Community College or certain Community Colleges in Southern California.

The Hawaii Community Foundation manages various scholarship programs. Applications open in mid-November and are due by January 31. A completed FAFSA (fafsa.ed.gov) is required prior to application.
Applicants must be of Hispanic heritage and there is an emphasis on STEM majors. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 and are open to graduate and undergraduate students. To qualify, you must: Have a 3.0 High School GPA and/or a 2.5 college GPA Be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, DACA or eligible non-citizen Have plans to enroll full-time at a two or four year U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam in the upcoming academic year.
Since 1984, Horatio Alger Association Members and Friends have been funding need-based college scholarships to support deserving young people to overcome their adversity and pursue their dreams through higher education. Open to high school seniors with values ranging at up to $22,000.

Minimum requirements to apply for a scholarship: Muslim or active member of the Muslim community; Enrollment at an accredited university in the U.S. by August; Majoring in an ISF supported major such as Journalism or English (Visit website for complete list at www. For high school seniors who are children or financial dependent of Teamster members. Recipients are selected by an impartial committee of university admissions and financial aid directors based on academic achievement, SAT/ACT scores, character, potential and financial need.
Any student who will be enrolled in the upcoming semester is eligible to apply. In order to apply, students must write a 1000 word essay describing at least 3 steps that you plan to take in the next year to start a path towards having a career that you love.
Apply by April 1 for the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship of up to $4,500 for tuition, fees and books. Criteria: 1. Must currently be an eligible Millennium Scholar; 2. Must be entering his/her senior or last year of college with 90 or more credits at an NSHE institution; 3. Be enrolled in and remain enrolled in a course of study leading to licensure in elementary or secondary education; 4. Maintain a college grade point average of not less than 3.5 on a 4.0 grading scale; 5. State a commitment to teaching in Nevada upon graduation; and 6. Have a commendable record of community service.
This is a scholarship program to benefit students who have suffered the death of a parent or guardian. Applicants are required to submit an essay (500 words MAX) or video (3-minutes MAX) describing how losing a parent or guardian affected you emotionally and financially. Essays should describe the impact that life insurance (or the lack thereof) had on family finances and on the ability of students to fund college costs. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $15,000.
Any student who is currently enrolled in school, or will be enrolled during the year can apply annually prior to June. To enter, the student must write a 300-500-word essay explaining how they go about honoring America's military heroes. 35 one-year scholarships of $3500 available to full-time juniors, seniors or graduate students, sophomores may submit an application for their junior year. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident of the U.S. A minimum 3.25 GPA is required. The Health Professions Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial incentive for students who are going to school to become a physician, dentist, optometrist, physician assistant or clinical psychologist. The Financial Assistance Program is designed for physicians or dentists in residency training. Up to 20 $2,000+ scholarships available to Nevadans who are graduating high school seniors or current college students enrolled in an agricultural related field of study and intending to pursue an agricultural career. Awards are based on financial need, scholastic proficiency, character, service, and specialized talents. Be concise! Preference to 4-H/FFA members. Applications and transcripts are due prior to March 15 with notification to winners in mid April.
Applicants must meet these criteria: (1) Nevada resident; Must submit proof of a valid Nevada I.D., (2) Accepted to or attending a Nevada post- secondary institution (two-or four-year college), (3) Enrolled in a broadcast or related curriculum such as broadcast journalism, broadcast accounting, broadcast engineering, etc, (4) Enrolled in at least 12 credit hours (full-time) each semester the scholarship is in effect, (5) Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, (6) Application signed by college radio/TV/ communications department head or high school counselor certifying the applicant meets the eligibility criteria.
This fund is available to children in custody of the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services who meet the following criteria: the child must have been in our custody in a foster or group home and must be graduating from high school or receiving the GED the year of application. Deadline for application is April 15th of each year.
Scholarships awarded to outstanding students, Phi Kappa Phi members and chapters through the Society's various awards competitions: the Fellowship, Phi Kappa Phi Scholar & Artist, Study Abroad Grants, Literacy Grants, and Love of Learning.
The Public Education Foundation offers more than 260 different scholarship opportunities for Southern Nevada’s high school seniors to attend both in-state and out-of-state schools. Review committees select recipients based on information submitted by the applicant. Some scholarship funds have specific eligibility requirements established by the donor, such as enrollment at a particular high school or specializing in a particular field of study.
Annual scholarship for a part-time or full-time student at University of Nevada, Reno or TMCC with a major in Earth Science. If no applicants in Earth Science, STEM majors would be considered. GPA at least 3.0. Two hundred word essay maximum to explain who you are and what are your plans. One year scholarships of $1,000 to $2,500 are available with an application deadline of March 22. Winners are notified in May. Scholarships are awarded to students based on the following criteria: Applicants must have graduated from a northern Nevada high school with a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Returning applicants must be full time and have earned at least a 3.0 in college. Students must declare a major in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, Natural Resources or the College of Science specific to Pre-Vet or Pre-Med degrees or declare a major in the Colleges of Business, Education, or Nursing at an accredited northern Nevada College or University.
A $1,000 scholarship offered to graduating Washoe County School District seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA who attended Rollan Melton Elementary School. Scholarship applications must be postmarked by February 13.
The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Current college students are not eligible to apply.
Graduating High School Seniors from northern Nevada who are legal US residents under age 21 should apply for one of 38 scholarships awarded each year! Applications open in October and the deadline is January 18 and award notices are sent in May. Awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.
Applications for seniors in high school in Clark and Nye counties are open from October through January 18. Applicants must have a minimum 2.7 GPA. Additional application requirements are listed at the website.

Sixt rent a car is pleased to offer five high school seniors the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship and become a Sixt Scholar. The program is designed to assist high school students who plan to continue their education in college. Scholarships are offered for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice. The Sacramento Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) awards scholarships annually to high school and college students who are studying engineering or related technical disciplines. Scholarships will vary from $1,000 to $4,000 for students in high school, junior college, and college students that are pursuing a degree in any engineering field or related technical sciences (including architecture, mathematics, physics, geology, and earth sciences). Applications open in January and are due by mid March.

The Mensa Foundation Scholarship Program awards more than $175,000 in assistance every year to college-bound students around the globe. Scholarships are awarded based solely on 550-word essays expressing applicants’ academic and professional goals and how their personal experiences will help them to accomplish those goals.
$2,000 scholarships will be awarded to help pay for tuition and books. Potential applicants must be pursuing a post-secondary degree at an accredited college or university.
Four $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year to help veterans further their education and enter a career field that would, in turn, help other veterans. Deadlines are May 1 and November 1. Applicants must be veterans of the armed forces and must plan to use their education to help fellow veterans. Applicants must provide their personal information and a statement of 300 words or fewer on how the applicant plans to use his or her education toward helping veterans.
To support scholarly research and writing among qualified civilian graduate students preparing dissertations in the history of warfare, the Center offers three Dissertation Fellowships each year. One, funded by the National Museum of the U.S. Army, is designed to support dissertations that explore the material culture of the Army; the two others support research in the more general areas of military history in all its many aspects.
This organization funds a wide variety of scholarships valued at up to $5,000 with application deadlines extending to late June.
