Mobile Engineering Education Laboratory (ME2L)
K-8 Classroom Visits to Local Elementary and Middle Schools
Our Mobile Engineering Education Lab (ME2L) outreach program hires and trains current UNR engineering students who present engineering related lessons to students in local classrooms (Washoe and Carson counties). We bring a Power Point presentation along with the materials for meaningful, hands-on lessons. Teachers can simply email or call our coordinator to make arrangements. There is no charge.
We begin with a short presentation about UNR’s engineering majors, careers in engineering, getting to college, and why math and science are important subjects. We then explain the specific lesson the teacher has requested and proceed with a hands-on activity. If teachers request that all grade levels in the school would like the lessons, we are able to present the 30 minute general and specific lesson information to a large group (e.g. all 120 sixth graders) then to approximately 30 students at a time for the actual 30 minute hands-on lesson. When requested for just one class (e.g. 30 students), we need approximately one hour total.
We have developed the following lessons that comply with the national science standards:
- Learn about Different Bridge Designs - Build a Bridge using K'Nex
- Learn about Clean Water - Identify pH levels
- Learn about Simple Machines - Build various models using K'Nex
- Learn about Electricity and Magnets - Build an Electric Motor
All of our K-12 outreach programs are made possible through the generous support from The Mallory Foundation and HDR Engineering, Inc. We appreciate their continued support.
If you would like more information or to schedule a ME2L visit to your classroom(s), please email or call Debbie Delauer, K-12 Outreach Coordinator: ddelauer@unr.edu or (775) 327-2256. Email is preferred.
