Mobile Engineering Education Laboratory (ME2L)
Classroom Visits for Local Elementary and Middle Schools (K-8)
Our Mobile Engineering Education Lab outreach program (commonly referred to as ME2L) involves current UNR engineering students presenting engineering related lessons to students in local classrooms. We bring our engineering presentation along with the materials for a meaningful, hands-on lesson. Teachers can simply email or call our coordinator to make arrangements.
We begin with a power point slide presentation about UNR’s engineering majors with information about careers in engineering, getting to college, and why math and science are important subjects to learn. We then explain the specific lesson the teacher has requested, proceeding with a fun learning activity. We are able to present the general information to a large group (ex: all 120 sixth graders) then to approximately 40 students at a time for the actual 30 minute lesson. If presenting to one class (ex: 30 students), we need approximately one hour. At this time we have developed the following lessons that comply with the national science standards:
Grades K-4:
- Learn about Different Bridge Designs - Build a Bridge using Knex
- Learn how Ground Water becomes Contaminated - Using an Aquifer
- Learn about Simple Machines - Using Gears and Pulleys
Grades 4-8:
- Learn about Electricity - Make a Battery from a Lemon
- Learn how Magnets Work - Build an Electric Motor
