Internships & Jobs

Internship Programs

An internship program is a work experience, full or part-time, directly related to a student's field of study for which the student can receive college credit. An internship helps a student learn industrial standards, standards of participation, responsibility, and communication. There are several types of internships: informal, transcript, for credit, and co-op.

Informal

Several organizations offer internships. These may be summer or part time jobs, and some are quite structured; that is, the intern is coached and observed. These can be listed on your resume, but they will not appear on your transcript, nor will you receive any academic credit.

Transcript

You can have an informal internship listed on your academic transcript, along with your academic credits. This requires that you fill out an application (forms are available from the Engineering Dean's Office or the office of Academic and Career Services). You must submit the application before starting work and get agreement from your employer. A report is required at the end of the employment period. A listing on the transcript greatly increases the value of your internship. [More Information]

For Credit

It is possible to get credit toward graduation for an internship. This is currently available in the departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. To receive credit, a student must work with a teacher to develop a program which will enhance his or her educational experience at UNR. The details of the program depend on a student's field of study and the job being performed during the internship. Typically, the process includes defining a task before work begins, the submission of informal reports during the work experience, and the filing of a final report at the end of the experience.

Computer Science and Engineering majors may earn up to three semester credits through an internship, which can be used to satisfy a technical elective. Electrical Engineering majors may earn one or more credits for each three-month internship; as many as three credits may be earned for each three-month internship which also can satisfy a technical elective. Mechanical Engineering majors may earn one credit for each three-month/semester internship; a maximum of three semester credits may be earned.

Co-Op

In a co-operative program, a student alternates full time study with full time employment. In a typical program, a year of study is followed by a half year of employment, and so on. At graduation, the student will have had a year of full time employment.
