Computer Science and Engineering Discipline Overviews:

The science of solving problems with the aid of a computer is a discipline positioned at the crossroads of many fields in mathematics, science, and engineering. Because of its importance to our world, Computer Science has become an extremely exciting field of study that is indispensable in all human endeavors from art and education to medicine and the exploration of our universe. Computer Science concentrates on theory, design, and applications of digital computers and information-processing techniques. It includes areas such as computer architecture, cryptography, machine vision, machine learning, robotics, embedded systems, parallel and distributed computing, software engineering, and computer graphics.

Computer Engineering deals with all aspects of computer systems including design, construction, and operation. It also encompasses areas such as manufacturing systems in which computers are interfaced with production machinery to control processes and quality. Computer Engineers study digital systems, operating systems, and computer networks. Although the focus is on hardware issues, Computer Engineers are closely involved in the software aspects of the discipline as well.
