There's always something going on at the College of Engineering. In addition to social events such as our Welcome Back BBQ or Spring Celebration, the College hosts a number of events for the community.
This annual event brings distinguished guest speakers and timely topics to campus to speak to the local community. The Distinguished Lecture Series was started in 2010 by Dean Maragakis. Annual lecture are listed below:
Each fall and spring, graduating engineering students can join The Order of the Engineer. This professional society, which was formed in Ohio in 1970, is dedicated to fostering pride and professional responsibility among engineers. Initiates are invited to accept the "Obligation of the Engineer" by taking an oath and receiving a ring. Professional engineers who wish to join the Order of the Engineer may also participate in this ceremony.
The College participates in this national event, held in February each year. Student organizations host tables where members of the University community can learn more about their groups and enjoy free pizza. The event ends with a "Brawl," or social, held in Harry Reid Engineering Laboratories. At the Brawl, student groups display Rube Goldberg machines, built to address a changing annual theme tackled by engineers around the nation. The contest winner is decided by a vote.
This outreach events brings 6th-12th students to the College of Engineering to learn about the engineering disciplines, see demonstrations and get excited about engineering. Engineers Day is a long-standing tradition within the College, and it brings anywhere from 200 to 400 students into the College's labs and classrooms each spring. Students are exposed to science and engineering principles in a fun and accessible way, such as watching how liquid nitrogen can make ice cream to demonstrate principles of heat transfer.
This annual social event honors student and faculty accomplishments. Students who meet one of the following criteria are invited to attend at no cost:
Other students, as well as faculty, staff and community members, may purchase a ticket for the event. It is held each May.
