Personal Safety Tips
University Police Services encourages you to use the Campus Escort Service for traveling at night by calling 775-742-6808 or University Police for an escort by dialing the non-emergency dispatch at 775-334-COPS (2677).
Also, please remember the following safety tips:
- If you know you are going to be studying and or working late on campus, plan ahead as to how you will get home safely.
- Never walk alone at night.
- Walk in groups or have a friend walk with you. Meet friends at locations from which the two of you can walk safely (i.e. well-lighted parking garages or lots).
- Remember to lock your doors and windows.
- Contact University Police by dialing 334-COPS (2677) or 911 if you observe a suspicious person or situation.
Street Sense 101
- Don’t walk alone- safety in numbers
- Stay on populated, well lighted-streets
- If you exercise at night, do so with a friend
- Dress for safety-Reflective vest, bright clothing
- Walk confidently, be aware of surroundings
- Use Campus Escort in the evenings
- Carry some type of noise maker i.e. whistle, personal alarm, etc.
- Take a self defense class
- Follow your intuition… trust your feelings
- If you see something/someone suspicious get away and call the police
Homes and Apartments
- Keep doors locked- whether you are home, gone for a few minutes or the whole weekend
- Don’t let unauthorized people in the building
- Don’t prop doors open - this jeopardizes everyone
- Report suspicious people or activities (including solicitors) to the police immediately
- Know the nearest fire escape route
- Fix malfunctioning locks (On campus, contact Buildings and Grounds)
- Develop a routine of who locks up
- Have an emergency escape plan
- If you see signs of forced entry, leave and call the police
