Personal Safety Tips

University Police Services encourages you to use the Campus Escort Service for traveling at night by calling 775-742-6808 or University Police for an escort by dialing the non-emergency dispatch at 775-334-COPS (2677).

Also, please remember the following safety tips:

  • If you know you are going to be studying and or working late on campus, plan ahead as to how you will get home safely.
  • Never walk alone at night.
  • Walk in groups or have a friend walk with you. Meet friends at locations from which the two of you can walk safely (i.e. well-lighted parking garages or lots).
  • Remember to lock your doors and windows.
  • Contact University Police by dialing 334-COPS (2677) or 911 if you observe a suspicious person or situation.

Street Sense 101

  • Don’t walk alone- safety in numbers
  • Stay on populated, well lighted-streets

  • Take a self defense class
  • Follow your intuition… trust your feelings
  • If you see something/someone suspicious get away and call the police

Homes and Apartments

  • Keep doors locked- whether you are home, gone for a few minutes or the whole weekend
  • Don’t let unauthorized people in the building
  • Don’t prop doors open - this jeopardizes everyone
  • Report suspicious people or activities (including solicitors) to the police immediately
  • Know the nearest fire escape route
  • Fix malfunctioning locks (on campus, contact Buildings and Grounds)
  • Develop a routine of who locks up
  • Have an emergency escape plan
  • If you see signs of forced entry, leave and call the police
