Donald Bear is director of the E.L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy and professor of the Literacy Studies in the Department of Educational Specialties. The Cord Foundation Center provides enrichment and tutoring to children to improve their reading and writing skills. Professor Bear is coauthor of Words Their Way and Developing Literacy: An Integrated Approach to Assessment and Instruction.

Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning
The Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning (CTL) fosters the development of students who strive to become exemplary elementary or secondary teachers through undergraduate and graduate coursework. The faculty of CTL focus on research and teaching related to the development of educators and educational programs suited to meet the needs of a complex and rapidly changing society.
The department's overriding goal is to promote excellent instruction that inspires deep conceptual understanding and critical thought to insure that schools, through their teachers and the instructional programs they offer, provide students the opportunity to develop into competent, productive, and healthy human beings. To these ends, the department offers programs that lead to initial teacher licensure and continued professional developement. The department offers degrees at the bachelors, post-baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels.
Educational Leadership
The Department of Educational Leadership (EL) offers graduate degree programs at three levels: Master of Education (M.Ed.) or Master of Arts (M.A.), Education Specialist (Ed.S.) and Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The coursework leading to a graduate degree is taught by a core faculty with expertise in the areas of organizational development, policy development, school administration, supervision and evaluation, curriculum development, school law, school finance, school plant planning, higher education and educational foundations.
Specializations in the areas of elementary and secondary curriculum, reading, counseling and guidance, special education and research can be obtained in cooperation with other departments within the College of Education. By combining some of the above areas, it is possible to provide additional programs for administrators whose roles require specific emphases.
Educational Specialties
We welcome your interest in our The Department of Educational Specialties has undergraduate, graduate, research projects, and grants in a variety of areas related to student diversity. Academic programs include undergraduate majors in Special Education, the Integrated Elementary/Special Education Program, and Early Childhood Education. Master's degree programs are available in Literacy Studies, Special Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and Educational Specialties (with area of emphasis).
Human Development and Family Studies
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies is committed to improving the lives of individuals and families through the dissemination of knowledge and sharing of expertise. Faculty are actively involved in research on a range of social issues.
Human Development and Family Studies offers two undergraduate majors: Human Development and Family Studies and Early Childhood Education. In addition, students pursuing a degree in a different major at UNR can earn a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. Within Human Development and Family Studies, students choose and focus course work in one of three areas of concentration: Child and Adolescent Development, Adult Development and Aging, or Family Studies. Early Childhood Education includes two optional specializations: Early Childhood Special Education and Family Support and Education.
Student Advisement Center

We are professional advisors whose goal is to provide academic advising primarily for the undergraduates of the teacher education programs. Offered by the Department of Educational Specialties & the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning, the programs are designed to meet Nevada teacher licensure requirements in the areas of Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, and Dual Elementary/Special Education.
Prospective students or candidates of Masters Degree and professional degree programs are advised by the respective program coordinators in the Department of Educational Specialties or the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning.
