Programs

CFRC offers care at 5 sites, three on/near campus and two sites off campus. The Sarah Fleischmann Building houses an infant/toddler program and two preschool classrooms for 3 and 4 year olds. The CFRC office is also located at this site; parents can obtain payment and enrollment information, students can receive personnel information. The 11th Street Site has two classrooms; the Pre-K class, a mixed age group of 3 and 4 year olds, and a mixed age Kindergarten/First Grade class for 5 and 6 year olds. A school age summer day camp program for children 5 to 10 years old is also located in the 11th Street Center during June, July and August each year. The Nelson Site has 4 classrooms, and the Comstock and Lighthouse sites each have 2 classrooms for children from infancy through the age of two.

Student Employment Eligibility

The CFRC hires student assistants each semester to work up to 20 hours per week. Student employees must have completed course work in early childhood education and/or have experience working with young children in a group setting. During the fall and spring semesters a student is eligible for student employment if he/she is enrolled in 6 undergraduate credits at UNR with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Students seeking summer employment must be continuing UNR students enrolled in at least 6 summer session credits, or enrolled in the fall semester for at least 6 credits. Students must have a current TB test and valid Sheriff’s card or FBI background check. Student employees are required to participate in 15 clock hours of training each year and must also attend scheduled staff meetings. The work performance of each student employee will be evaluated each semester by the supervising teachers. Students with substandard evaluations will not be rehired for subsequent semesters.

Student Roles and Responsibilities

Student assistants are a very important part of our staff team. Our philosophy emphasizes the importance of relationships and continuity in the lives of young children. Scheduling decisions are made to support this continuity, therefore, it is very important that students working in the center make every effort to be at work in their assigned classrooms every working day during the entire semester, including finals week. It is not appropriate to find a substitute care giver unless you are ill or have a legitimate emergency. Needing to study, write a paper at the last minute or attend a concert are not emergencies! It is very important for the children and other staff that you are at work. If you are ill and cannot work it is your responsibility to contact a substitute.

Always remember when working with children to be professional. Maintain a professional attitude and observe the ethics of working in a university learning situation. The privacy of the children and families at the center is to be respected at all times. Do not discuss children or families at our center with anyone (other parents, your friends, or family). Unless you can say something complimentary, do not talk about the children or teachers to others. If you don’t want others to hear what you are saying, don’t say it. Your attention needs to be with the children, not talking about them or their parents or their teachers.

Try to help where you are needed. Standing or sitting and watching are not generally needed… action is. Be alert, ask questions. Move around whenever you are needed. Learn where supplies and equipment are kept and be able to get them out and remember to put them away. Be sure to follow identified procedures when you are opening or closing a room for the day.

Payroll

You must complete new hire paperwork and be currently registered in classes in order to receive a paycheck. Sign in/out daily, total your hours at the end of each day, and total and submit your timesheet at the end of each payperiod. Paydays are on the 10th and 25th of each month. Checks can be picked up at the cashier’s office on the third floor of the Student Services Building. You can set up direct deposit, pick up a form at SFB 120 or download the form from the University web site.
