Media Library

About the Media Library

The media library, a unique cooperative effort of the College of Education and the Washoe County School District (WCSD), contains a wide variety of material designed for curriculum enrichment, lesson enhancement, and professional development.

Patrons of the Learning & Resource Center consist of University of Nevada Reno students, faculty, and staff; Washoe County School District teachers, librarians and counselors; private school teachers in our area; teachers outside of Washoe County District in contiguous school sites in Lyon, Churchill, Carson City Districts, and patrons associated with the BADA/CASAT programs. They may draw from the more than 44,000 materials housed in the Learning & Resource Center in a variety of different media formats including print materials, audio and video tapes, DVD's, instructional kits, study prints, slides, computer software, artifacts, and manipulatives. Digital camcorders and VHS, tripods, external microphones and cassette voice recorders are also available for checkout.

The center is equipped for viewing and reviewing all materials located in the media library. The library also has an extensive collection of juvenile books to enhance lessons and presentations. Among the holdings of the Learning & Resource Center are resource materials in the professional section, periodicals, journals, the Nevada section, substance abuse prevention materials, books from the Dean's Grant for Special Education, the Equity Education grant, and a growing collection of English as a Second Language (ESL) resources. The professional collection also includes a variety of university and school district staff development materials as well as the Washoe County School District adopted textbooks for K-12 grades.

Nevada CD Software Preview Center

Located in the Learning & Resource Center, the Nevada CD Software Preview Center was established by the Washoe County School District and allows College of Education faculty and students and Washoe County School District teachers and personnel to view educational CD programs. This cooperative effort between the college and the school district allows teachers and future teachers to preview software before purchase for use in their classrooms. Education students use the Preview Center in class assignments integrating this latest technology into their class curriculum and lesson plans. They can also access the PLATO software, WCSD's credit recovery program for middle and high school students, and take the PRAXIS practice exam. When these future teachers go out into their school districts, they will have a greater knowledge of this valuable teaching tool and be an advocate for increased technology of this valuable teaching tool and be an advocate for increased technology in the classroom.
