The Design Lab was established so that the College of Education's students and practicing teachers could go into the classroom with all the technology they need to best teach today's children, and to effectively advocate for the latest technology in their schools.
The Design Lab has six Apple computer stations and two PC stations so all work can be tested for presentation on both Mac and PC's.
The Design Lab is a self-use facility that is accessed through the University's NetID and by checking out equipment needed at the front desk, like MiniDV decks and microphones for digital video editing. The staff in the LRC can assist patrons with using the equipment.
Each Macintosh station in the Design Lab has iMovie for digital video editing, along with the latest print design software with Adobe Creative Suite which includes InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. The Mac's also have Media Encoder, Media Player, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash. The Mac's also include Microsoft Office which includes Powerpoint. The PCs also have the latest in print design software with Adobe Creative Suite as well as Microsoft Office.
There are four scanning stations, one for every two computers and one large format scanner that scans up to 12x18 inches. The scanning stations have optical character recognition software to enable documents to be scanned in as editable text, in addition to scanning high quality and large format photos and images for high-impact visual presentations.
A variety of transfer stations are set up just outside the Graphics Room and Design Lab area that can transfer VHS, DVD and other video formats, including Hi8, Super8 (must bring camera and cables for transfer), into MiniDV format for importing and editing on the Design Lab computers. A DVD recorder enables patrons to burn DVDs from all of these formats, also.
One color laser printer is available for print in the Lab. The Hewlett Packard Color Laser Printer 5500 prints up to llx17 tabloid size. There is also HP DesignJet 800ps that prints poster size prints up to 24 inches wide. There is no charge for the use of the computers in the Design Lab; the only charge is for printing.
There are price sheets in the door going into the Lab and posted throughout the Lab and Graphics Room area and posed on the website.
