Intervention and Initiating Treatment moves the professional to the milieu of detecting and intervening with an alcohol/drug using client. The materials cover the role of substance abuse treatment; common problems of women seeking publicly supported treatment; client motivation for accepting treatment; recommendations for treatment programs serving pregnant, substance-using women; blocks to diagnosis and treatment; assessing readiness for change; intervention techniques; the role of the ob/gyn and ancillary personnel; and suggestions for adaptations to chemical dependency treatment for the substance addicted woman who is FAS. Two role plays are provided which focus on Miller's FRAMES model of intervention (1991).
