VIII. Sedative-Hypnotics
A. Inpatient medical withdrawal with continual monitoring of mother and fetus is recommended for:
1. Barbiturates
2. Benzodiazepines
3. Other sedative-hypnotic drugs
B. Considerations for withdrawal from sedative-hypnotic drugs during pregnancy
1. Severe withdrawal can produce epilepticus and maternal/fetal respiratory arrest
2. The use of anticonvulsants have been associated with congenital anomalies
a. Anticonvulsant use must be based on an assessment of risk versus benefit
