IV. Marijuana
A. Possible effects on reproduction and fertility
1. Males: lowered sperm counts and altered sperm morphology
2. Females: irregular menstrual cycles and ovulation abnormalities
3. Temporary infertility
4. Effects appear reversible when use stops (and, in females, when tolerance is established)
B. Possible effects on the course of pregnancy
1. Marijuana readily crosses the placenta
a. Transfer appears higher early in pregnancy than in third trimester
b. Lab studies indicate that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may cause higher male-to-female sex ratio in offspring
C. Postpartum
1. Mother
a. THC appears in breast milk of marijuana smoking women
b. Breast feeding is not recommended for mothers using marijuana
2. Child
a. Neonate
Tremulousness
Altered visual response patterns to light stimulus
Shrill, withdrawal-like crying
May affect sleep and arousal patterns
