ENDORSEMENT TO TEACH ENGLISH
AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

(Grade level appropriate to base license)

To receive an endorsement to teach English as a second language, a person must have:
A. a valid elementary, secondary or special teaching license; and
B. have completed 12 semester hours of credit in the courses of study listed below:

  1. Methods and materials for teaching English as a second language;
  2. Theories for the acquisition of a second language;
  3. Testing and evaluation of pupils studying English as a second language; or
  4. Developing a curriculum for pupils studying English as a second language.

[The 12 credits completed needs to be in the areas above, but you do not need to take one course in each area. There is flexibility in your choices. Please see an advior if you have questions.]

PROFESSIONAL ENDORSEMENT TO TEACH
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE-TESL

To receive an endorsement as a professional teacher of English as a second language, a person must have completed the all requirements for an endorsement to teach English as a second language and:
A. Hold a master’s degree; and
B. Have 3 years of verified experience as a teacher; and
C. have the Endorsement in TESL.

UNR TESOL Courses that meet the ESL endorsement requirements for the state of Nevada

Beginning in Fall of 2009, there will be two exciting new changes. (1) we will offer a Graduate Certificate in TESOL that conforms to the Nevada ESL endorsement and adds one additional couse. This endorsement is noted on your transcript. (2) There are new courses that have been added to the program that will meet the ESL endorsement requirement. Please talk to an advisor for details

  • EDRL 672 ESL instruction in the Elementary School
  • EDRL 673 TESOL Instruction for Adolescents and Adults
  • DRL 678 Theory & Instruction in ESL: Reading/ Writing (new in 2009-2010)
  • EDRL 679 Theory & Instruction in ESL: Speaking/ Listening (new in 2009-2010)
  • EDRL 735 Language Assessment
  • EDRL 736 Curriculum Development in Second Language Education
  • EDRL 690 Teaching Spanish Speakers in American ESL Settings (new in 2009-2010)
  • EDRL 738 ESL Practicum
