Welcome to the TESOL Program Homepage
at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The TESOL Program in the Department of Educational Specialities at the Univeristy of Nevada, Reno is located in the College of Education. The program offers several degree options:

  • The MA TESOL Degree (Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) provides a course of study leading to the Master of Arts Degree with a major in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The program is designed for both native and non-native speakers of English who wish to teach ESL (English as a Second Language) or EFL (English as a Foreign Language).

  • Students interested in doctoral study may want to explore the Doctoral Program in EDS with an emphasis on Language, Literacy, and Culture. A doctoral program in TESOL per se is not offered.

  • ESL minor for Secondary Education majors. More.

  • ESL endorsement courses for licensed K-12 teachers. More.

  • We are in the process of developing a graduate certificate program for students who want to earn 15 credits in TESOL in a coherent sequence designed to meet ESL teacher endorsement standards or to provide a foundation in TESOL for interested students.

The MA TESOL degree prepares the candidates for employment as teachers, program directors, curriculum consultants, or materials developers. Candidates for this degree will do course work in second language acquisition theories, TESOL methods and materials, linguistics, bilingualism, and multicultural education.

Those interested in Teaching English Abroad, please see the web site created by MA-TESOL students on this topic.
