About TEAC
This teacher professional development course engages participants in the
exciting study of Earth science with a focus on active tectonics, seismicity,
and related geology. Dr. Ken Smith, Seismologist and Director of the Nevada
K-12 Seismic Network, will lead the six-day field experience that will take us
to Lake Tahoe for 2 days, to Fallon for one night, then south through an
amazing fault zone, ending up in Mammoth Lakes, California, for the
final three days of the field experience. The focus will be on map reading,
recognition of land forms and fault types, and an overview of the forces and
events that have shaped the Eastern Sierra Region.

Each group of five teachers will be facilitated by a staff member with
expertise in Earth science content, science pedagogy, and/or educational
technology. Various regional experts and research scientists will join us at
different times along our journey to enhance our learning and provide
surprising experiences for us. Each group will travel in its own Suburban or
similar vehicle.
Participants will receive a packet of maps and materials and a software
package that will bring real-time seismic data into their classrooms. Two
pre-sessions will prepare us for the field experience with Earth science content
knowledge and introduce us to advanced pedagogical knowledge in
assessment and differentiated instruction. The post-session will be a time for
sharing our experiences in bringing enhanced Earth science content modules
to our own students.
