Content Area Literacy Instruction Course Details: Content Area Literacy Instruction is a year-long opportunity for teachers to learn more about helping struggling readers and writers in their content-area classrooms by employing high-quality Tier I instruction. Teachers will meet monthly to learn and apply strategies for teaching academic vocabulary, learn and apply strategies for differentiating reading and writing instruction for struggling, average, and advanced students, and participate in online, collegial discussions. Revised Course! The Basics: Setting Up for Success with Narrative/Memoir Writing Course Details: Building a strong writing foundation begins before 5th grade. Our fifth grade writing examinations almost always prompt students to write a passage that is narrative in nature. In this course, we will provide a basic framework to facilitate narrative writing strategies (the basics) such as a traits overview, connections to the writing process, and elements of writing. We will also use two of Ralph Fletcher’s books (How to Write Your Life Story and Marshfield Dreams) to explore the advice an actual author gives students when they are writing to narrative prompts or longer memoirs. Teachers will craft classroom resource book for reference while teachings specific skills necessary for strong narrative writing and narrative passages and using Fletcher’s wise advice that can be shared with their classes. Kindergarten Writer's Workshop Course Details: During the class, participants will become familiar with Jodie Black's Writer’s Workshop methods by using her guide, “Start to Write.” Teachers will learn about very young writers journaling and workshop. Many writing genres will be introduced with methods for teaching them successfully to kindergartners. Teachers will be asked to try these methods in their own classrooms and report successes.
