Northern Nevada Writing Project: Writing Across the Curriculum

BIG NEWS from the NNWP and its WAC Initiatives!

It's ready! For the thousands of you who have enjoyed and used our 2005 publication, the Writing Across the Curriculum Guide, we are pleased to inform you that we now have a "sequel" to that resource: The Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide. Click here to find out more information on this new resource for teachers and classrooms.

The Northern Nevada Writint Project believes that writing should be taught at every grade level, no matter what the subject matter. In 2005, we launched a new resource--the Writing Across the Curriculum Guide-- which now has close to 10,000 copies in circulation throughout Northern Nevada and around the world.

For 2008, we are launching three exciting new projects: 1) The HistoryFix website, 2) the ScienceFix website, and 3) the NumberFix website.

Corbett Harrison is the Northern Nevada Writing Project's Writing Across the Curriculum Coordinator.  In 1996, Corbett became a consultant for the Northern Nevada Writing Project by taking the NNWP's Summer Institute.  Since then, he has been involved in dozens of NNWP projects.  The creation of the popular Writing Across the Curriculum Guide remains one of his favorite accomplishments while he served as NNWP Director between 2002-2007.

Our Writing Across the Curriculum Programs & Resources:

16-hour inservice classes: Each Spring, we offer a Writing Across the Curriculum inservice course, where participants learn how to use the tools in our Writing Across the Curriculum Guide. Participants also use ideas from one of our favorite books: Barry Lane's Wacky We-Search Reports.

Our Writing Across the Curriculum Guide is also used in Washoe County's New Teacher Academies, which are offered four or five times annually through Washoe County's inservice department. Three hours of these 15-hour classes are devoted to learning how to write meaningfully in curricular areas beyound language arts.

The NNWP's Writing Across the Curriculum Guide is available for purchase at our Publications page.

2- and 3-hour trait workshops: Thanks to our strong partnership with Nevada's Northwest Regional Professional Development Program, we offer on-site writing across the curriculum workshops during early release days for schools.

Teachers receive copies of the WAC Guide, and they plan site-based strategies to address the writing needs of their students in all the curriculum areas.

On-line Trait Resources: Our ever-growing collection of free WAC ideas and tools can be accessed from WritingFix's Writing Across the Curriculum Homepage.

In Spring of 2008, we will be launching three new resource-based WAC websites to complement the 6-Trait resources we offer at WritingFix:
