Writing Across the Curriculum (W.A.C.) Initiatives

Corbett Harrison serves as the Northern Nevada Writing Project's Writing Across the Curriculum Coordinator.  In 1996, Corbett became a consultant for the Northern Nevada Writing Project by taking the NNWP's Summer Institute.  Since then, he has been involved in dozens of NNWP projects.  The creation of the soon-to-be-out-of-print Writing Across the Curriculum Guide remains one of his favorite accomplishments while he served as NNWP Director between 2002-2007. Corbett currently works for the Northwest Regional Professional Development Program as a full-time teacher trainer, and his WAC trainings are some of his favorite to present.

At the Northern Nevada Writing Project, we consider the writing process to be an act of higher-level thinking, and higher-level thinking should be happening in every classroom no matter what the content. Many content area teachers do not consider themselves to be "writing teachers," and our goal is to help those teachers think about the teaching of writing differently. The resources you will find on this page are our current projects that we've designed to help all teachers look at the role of a "writing teacher" in a different way.

Our Writing Across the Curriculum Projects:

The Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide and Webpage

In January 2008, we published a brand new print resource we called the Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide. Its big question for teachers: How does compare and contrast thinking inspire students to write better?

Carol Gebhardt, the NNWP's incoming Director, coordinated the project, and her team of K-12 teachers spent a semester exploring interesting ways to bring comparative thinking to all curriculum areas.

In Northern Nevada, administrators or department heads may order a school or department set of these guides for the low cost of $5.00, which is reimbursement for the cost of printing. Outside of Northern Nevada, teachers may order this guide by visiting our NNWP Publication Page.

As we created the guide, we also built an accompanying webpage at WritingFix. At this webpage, teachers can freely access about 20% of the guide's resources. At our workshops that use the guide as their text, we challenge participating teachers to create new comparison/contrast lessons and resources, and many of those then get posted at the website, causing the page to grow. You can check out the Comparison/Contrast webpage by clicking here.

We hope our efforts continue to inspire teachers to use comparative thinking as a way to inspire writing across the curriculum.

Our 2005-2006 Writing Across the Curriculum Guide: Soon to be out of Print!

To make room in our storeroom for upcoming guides that we'll be featuring at NNWP, we have decided to no longer print our hugely popular Writing Across the Curriculum Guide outside of Northern Nevada. Over 4000 copies of this print guide have been placed in the hands of teachers everywhere. Visit our publications page before January 2009 to order one of the last copies!

Corbett Harrison, while Director of the NNWP in 2005, coordinated the effort to create this print resource. It was distributed and used during all the NNWP Writing Across the Curriculum trainings offered by the NNWP between 2005 and 2008. In Fall of 2008, our new Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide will become the new text used at WAC trainings.

In Northern Nevada, administrators or department heads may still order a school or department set of these guides for the low cost of $5.00, which is reimbursement for the cost of printing.

Many of this guides resources can be accessed on-line at the following pages at WritingFix:

New W.A.C. Resources Being Designed

The research of Robert Marzano (Classroom Instruction that Works) inspired the creation of our Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide.

In February 2009, we will be launching two new projects further inspired by Marzano's synthesis of educational research.

We will be creating a new print guide (expected to be ready by May 2010) that focuses on new techniques for summarization and notetaking strategies across the curriculum.

We are also be creating a new webpage that focuses on how non-linguistic representations can inspire and complement writing across the curriculum projects.

Check back here for updates on these exciting new projects for us at the NNWP.

Our Most Popular W.A.C. Inservice: 2009-2010

In February 2008, author and friend-of-the-NNWP, Barry Lane, presented an all-day workshop in Northern Nevada that was inspired by his book, 51 Wacky We-Search Reports.

Participants enjoyed the day so much that we designed a new inservice workshop that will be was offered three times during the 2008-2009 school year: Writing Across the Curriculum Techniques: Wacky We-Search and Deeper Student Thinking. Due to its popularity, the class is slated to run two more times in the 2009-2010 school year. You can access this class's resources at WritingFix's Writing Across the Curriculum Homepage.

Not only will participants deeply explore Barry's book, but they will also have time to unpack information found in the Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide as well as explore lessons from WritingFix's sister sites: HistoryFix, NumberFix, and ScienceFix.

Another Popular W.A.C. Inservice: 2009-2010

During the 2008-2009 school year, NNWP TC Rob Stone began test-running a new inservice class: iPods Across the Curriclum. Participants explored ways to use music, video, and podcasts as inspiration for new writing lessons in all curriculum areas.

The class was a hit. Rob kept getting asked if he would offer it again, so he has graciously offered to begin offering the class regularly, twice every school year. The NNWP appreciates Rob's dedication to this topic and to the teachers of Northern Nevada.

Participants each receive a copy of the NNWP's Going Deep with 6 Trait Language Guide in exchange for a proposed lesson idea. The best lesson proposals become a part of the WritingFix website.

A New W.A.C. Inservice: 2009-2010

In November 2009, a brand new inservice class was created and hosted by the Northern Nevada Writing Project: Persuasive Writing Across the the Curriculum. Participants of this class receive a complimentary copy of Barry Lane and Gretchen Bernabei's Why We Must Run with Scissors.

Participants will all propose a persuasive writing lesson; the best of these proposals will become part of the Persuasive Writing Across the Curriculum Homepage at WritingFix.

Not only will participants deeply explore Barry's book, but they will also have time to unpack information found in the Going Deep with Compare and Contrast Thinking Guide. We will offer this class twice during the 2009-2010 school year.
